Best Countries to Visit in June: North America

Costa Rica

By Lucy and Dan of Thoroughly Travel

Nestled in the middle of Central America, Costa Rica is one of the most biologically rich places on Earth and one of the best countries to visit in June. June is a great time to visit Costa Rica as it’s the end of peak season, meaning prices are lower and there are fewer crowds. While June is also the start of the rainy season, showers are infrequent and often only in the afternoons.

Four weeks is a good amount of time to spend in Costa Rica, but two weeks would suffice to get a good flavor of both coasts. Costa Rica is easily accessible via its international airport in San Jose, while those traveling overland can cross the borders from Nicaragua or Panama.

Hiring a car is the best way to get around Costa Rica, but public buses and shuttles are available between the main towns. Home to both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, there are several diverse areas to explore in Costa Rica, including mountainous cloud forests, volcanic landscapes, sprawling beaches and remote jungles.

A few popular activities include ziplining through cloud forests in Monteverde, spotting sloths in La Fortuna, seeing indigenous animals in national parks like Manuel Antonio, chasing waterfalls, hiking around volcanoes and camping by the beach.

While Costa Rica is more expensive than its Central American neighbors, it’s still possible to travel on a budget. Activities will be your largest expense, but you can save money by self-catering, traveling in shoulder season and camping in Costa Rica in June.

Mexico

By Mal of Let’s Travel To Mexico City

Despite being the beginning of the rainy season, June is still a fantastic time to visit Mexico. First, it rains nowhere near as much as in August or September, and the rainfall usually hits in short, refreshing bursts. Plus, June sees fewer tourists, meaning you’ll enjoy less crowded attractions and potentially snag some great deals on accommodation and experiences. The most convenient airports to fly into are Mexico City and Cancun.

Mexico is a vast country, and you will need at least two weeks to get a good feel for it and tick off some of the most epic bucket list activities, such as seeing Chichen Itza pyramids or attending a  Lucha Libre show in Mexico City. Mexico is also famous for its amazing, unspoiled nature, and one of the absolute must-do things is swimming in Mexican cenotes.

Most first-time visitors choose the Yucatan Peninsula as a starting point. Places like Cancun and Tulum are great for a beach vacation. In Yucatan, you will also find charming colonial towns such as Merida and Valladolid.

Mexico is an extremely affordable country excellent for backpackers and budget-conscious travelers with a daily travel budget starting at $50. It is well connected by domestic flights and public buses (for shorter distances) – both reliable and cheap.

Renting a car is also affordable and Yucatan is very safe for international visitors. Mexico is one of the best countries to visit in June.

St. Kitts

By Steph from Book It Let’s Go!

St Kitts is a tiny island in the Caribbean and is a real hidden gem to visit anytime of the year however if you are visiting St Kitts in June you are in for a treat. June is when the annual music festival is held which brings famous acts from all over the world, headliners have previously included Jay-Z, Shaggy, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Lionel Ritchie & Jason Derulo. So if R&B and reggae are your jam it’s a festival not to be missed. The music festival is held over 4 days however to make the most of St Kitts I would recommend staying at least one week to see more of this tropical paradise.

Of course the music festival is not the only thing to do in St Kitts in June, the island itself is full of history and surrounded by beautiful beaches with a lush rainforest and mountains you can hike if you’re feeling adventurous.

If you are looking for where to stay in St Kitts then the best area for bars and restaurants is Frigate Bay which has a range of hotels from mid-range to luxury.

Due to its volcanic nature St Kitts is very hilly so it’s recommended to rent a car rather than relying on expensive taxis. Being a Caribbean island St Kitts is not a budget destination so be prepared to spend at least $100 a day on accommodation, food and transport.

St Kitts also has a sister island, Nevis which is a 2 mile boat ride away across The Narrows. Nevis is a peaceful island with a different vibe to St Kitts so if you want to extend your trip it’s worth visiting even if just for the day.

Bolivia

By Sara and Ryan of Across Every Border

When considering your next destination, we bet Bolivia doesn’t come to mind! It is one of the best countries to visit in June.

Although it’s heading into peak season in June, you’ll still miss the crowds so it’s still easy to find deals on tours and accommodation. In addition, June is within Bolivia’s dry season, offering sunny days, mild temperatures and the best conditions for outdoor adventures – something Bolivia is well-known for.

Attractions in Bolivia are endless. Think riding the Camino de la Muerte, exploring Salar de Uyuni and the highlands and setting off dynamite in Potosi’s silver mines to name a few. In Bolivia on June 21st? Head to Tiwanaku to experience the traditional winter solstice festival the local way!

We would highly recommend a full month to experience Bolivia. If you’re low on time, a two week trip could suffice if you travel fast! But fast or slow, definitely utilize the bus infrastructure instead of hiring a car as it’s pretty high quality! Most companies offer 160° seat-beds, perfect for a night’s snooze.

There are three main areas to stay in Bolivia: La Paz, Sucre and Santa Cruz. However if your goal is the salt flats, you’ll need to base in Uyuni for a few days. We’d highly recommend Sucre over the other two cities. It’s a stunning example of an old colonial city that’s been reconstructed in a Bolivian style.

In terms of costs, Bolivia is super budget friendly! To keep costs low, use public transport, eat menu del día or book hostels instead of hotels. We found that Airbnb’s are reasonably priced too, if you’re looking for more of an apartment.

But overall you can expect a daily budget of anywhere between $20 and $50 depending on your tastes!

Peru

A view of Machu Picchu. #traveltheworld #summertime #summertravel #june

By Callie of Counting Our Footsteps

Visiting in June is like catching Peru in its prime – the weather is amazing, with clear, sunny days making it perfect for trekking through the Andes or exploring the Amazon rainforest. Plus, it’s the month of the Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, which transforms Cusco into a giant colorful party full of parades, dance, and traditional music.

You will want to spend 10-14 days to be able to fully enjoy the country. Whilst the country is impressively big, the south is where you should be visiting. Starting in Lima and ending in Cusco makes the perfect itinerary for visiting the best sites. This time allows you to immerse yourself in the diversity of Peru’s landscapes and culture, from the world-famous Machu Picchu to the picturesque villages and all the different climates.

Getting there and around doesn’t necessarily require a car. The cities are well-connected by flights and buses. Taking local buses is a reliable, cheap way to get around.

If you prefer spending more time in one place instead of moving around, Cusco is your golden ticket. It’s not only the gateway to Machu Picchu but also a mix of colonial charm, history, indigenous communities, and culinary experiences.  It’s also full of local artisan shops and markets, making it great for souvenir hunting.

From wandering through the beautiful white streets of Arequipa to sandboarding in Huacachina, Peru is full of experiences. Don’t miss the chance to boat on Lake Titicaca or visit the Nazca Lines. These things make Peru one of the best countries to visit in June.

Budget-wise, Peru is as accommodating as you want. Whether you’re a backpacker on a tight budget or looking to spend some time enjoying some luxury, you’ll find options fitting your budget, making it relatively budget-friendly.

Best Countries to Visit in June: Europe

Iceland

A road leading through a mountain. #traveltheworld #summertime #summertravel #june

By Shweta of Zest in a Tote

Iceland is one of the best countries to visit in June as it is the start of summer. The midnight sun appears, meaning the days are incredibly long. Everything is open and accessible, long days means there is time to see everything without any rush.  If you are visiting Iceland in June, I would recommend 10 days if you want to do a full ring road itinerary. If you visit for 5-7 days, I would urge you to focus on 1 or 2 areas besides Reykjavik to make the most of your trip.

It is easy to rent a car and drive everywhere in the summer months in Iceland. Reykjavik and the popular Golden Circle stops are the most visited in Iceland. You can stay in Reykjavik and drive to all the Golden Circle route stops from there. You can admire lupine fields, coastal roads, and great scenery in Snaefellsnes Peninsula in the western region. Then there is central Iceland. There are pretty villages like Hellnar or Budir to spend a night or two.

North Iceland has whale watching, Europe’s largest waterfall and the scenic area of Lake Myvatn to visit. The popular South Coast of Iceland has magnificent waterfalls, the largest glacier of the country, stunning black beaches and more adventurous activities than can be done in one trip. Make Vik town your base in South Iceland.

Iceland is an expensive destination, even more so in the summer months from June until August. So you need to make a budget estimate and book hotels, car rental, and tours much in advance.

Cyprus

By Nofar Ronen of Traveling Outside the Box

Cyprus is an excellent destination and one of the best countries to visit in June. The weather is hot for vacation but not too hot for hiking in nature reserves, villages and mountains. In addition, it is not the peak of the season, so the prices are cheaper and there are no crowds.

You will want to spend at least one week in Cyprus, but it’s also great for a short vacation. You can only get to Cyprus by plane since it is an island. Cyprus has two airports in the cities of Paphos and Larnaca.

If you are coming for more than a few days then combine several areas. The main areas are Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa and Protaras.

Cyprus is also suitable for a vacation with children, for couples as well as for a vacation with friends. In Cyprus you will find 3 water parks (in Paphos, Ayia Napa and Limassol), Luna parks (large in Ayia Napa and small in Protaras), a yacht cruise with snorkels (in Paphos and Ayia Napa), a resort with the largest casino in Europe (City of dreams in Limassol), jeeps trips (Ayia Napa and Paphos), charming villages, amazing beaches, a trip to the mountains (the Troodos mountains in winter also have skiing), top-class hotels and a light and fun vacation atmosphere.

What’s good about Cyprus is that it suits everyone. Both for those who want a vacation on a low budget and for those who are looking for the most luxurious vacation.

Norway

By Josh of A Backpacker’s World

Norway is an amazing country to visit in June. It’s one of the best months of the year to visit because the weather is starting to get warm, which makes it much nicer than visiting in the winter when it is bitterly cold. On the other hand, it’s not yet the full summer so the crowds aren’t as busy as in July and August.

The two most popular places in Norway to visit are Oslo, the capital city, and the Norwegian Fjords which is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. If you want to visit both, you need at least a week in Norway. It’s best to hire a car so you have the freedom to explore where you want when you want, and with all of the natural beauty on offer in Norway, you’ll want to explore as much as possible, especially since in parts of the country, there are 24 hours of sunlight in the summer months.

The only downside about visiting Norway is that it’s incredibly expensive, so if you are traveling on a budget, it’s best to give Norway and the rest of Scandinavia a miss. You also can’t see the Northern Lights in June.

But Norway makes up for these negatives with endless amazing experiences. There are so many things to do in Norway which are straight out of a dream such as kayaking through the Fjords in Flam (the best place to stay in the Fjords), taking a cable car ride for an incredible view of Oslo, and camping. A really cool thing about Norway is that you can camp anywhere for free and you don’t need permission.

If you are a fan of the outdoors and nature, Norway is one of the best countries to visit in June.

Albania

By Tamara of My Elated Odyssey

Are you torn about which country to visit during the summertime? Albania should easily be at the top of your list and is one of the best countries to visit in June.

June is a perfect time to visit Albania, primarily because of the weather. On average, you can expect temperatures ranging from a high of 85°F (29°C) and a low of 63°F (17°C). There are also many sunny days.

How many days you should spend in Albania will depend on personal preferences. Most people will visit the capital city of Tirana and a coastal destination for a first visit. Four to five days will work if you want to do Tirana and at least one coastal town.

Albania has only one international airport, Tirana International Airport. Flying is the most popular option to enter. To get around the country, buses depart from Tirana’s domestic bus terminal and visit all popular cities and towns. Connections are also made between other destinations, such as Saranda and Berat.

Renting a car is the second most popular way of getting around, but driving in Albania can be challenging. Some of the best locations to base yourself on are Tirana for urban life and easy day trips and Saranda and Ksamil for a beach getaway. Shkoder and Theth are great if you want to be around the Albanian Alps.

Some of the best things to do in Albania in June include visiting beautiful beaches like Ksamil Beach and Dhermi, which also have water activities. Exploring UNESCO sites like Berat and natural wonders like the Blue Eye are also popular.

One of the best parts about an Albania trip in June is that it costs far less than its neighbors, such as Greece. The country is very budget-friendly, and you can expect to spend as low as €42 daily on expenses.

Best Countries to Visit in June: Asia

Indonesia

A narrow walkway between mounds. #traveltheworld #summertime #summertravel #june

By Simon of Backpack Moments

Indonesia: A country spanning 5300 km, spread over 17.000 islands, and home to at least 100 different ethnic groups. If anything, it’s not a country you explore only once – you can keep returning for more islands and more adventures.

If it’s your first time, Bali and Java are an awesome introduction to this eclectic country. June is one of the driest months there and the weather allows for both beach holidays and volcano treks.

Let’s say you have a month to spend in Indonesia. Split it equally between Java and Bali. In 2 weeks in Java, you can visit fascinating volcanoes like Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen, breathtaking waterfalls like Tumpak Sewu and Madakaripura, and dive into Javanese history and culture in Yogyakarta with trips to the ancient temples of Borobudur and Prambanan.

Hop over to Bali for the next two weeks and explore the Island of the Gods. Relax next to rice terraces around Ubud, surf at Uluwatu, soak in the sun at Nusa Dua, trek Mount Batur, explore hidden waterfalls, and cleanse your spirits at the more than 1000 Hindu temples. Bali Art Festival – the biggest annual event in Bali – starts in mid-June with celebrations and performances across the island.

Transportation-wise, use the train network to travel around Java and rent a motorcycle to explore Bali independently. Renting a car is not necessary – it’s even discouraged due to the heavy traffic. But if a two-wheeler isn’t an option, there are plenty of drivers willing to take you wherever you want.

How much would all that cost, you ask? Actually, not that much! Indonesia is one of the cheapest countries in the world! You can backpack for a month for less than 500$ but even splurging on more comfort and some luxury, Java and Bali are incredibly affordable holiday destinations. Thus, Indonesia is one of the best countries to visit in June.

Japan

By Brandon of Zimmin Around the World

The country of Japan is beautiful all year long. Sakura Trees bloom from March to April, the fall leaves turn colors throughout the country in late October to early December, and northern Japan sees a lot of snowfall during the winter months. But one of the best months to visit Japan is June.

In June, the rainy season starts to diminish across the country, it isn’t as hot and humid as it gets in months like July and August, and it isn’t peak tourist season.

Japan is a diverse country, from the island of Hokkaido in the north to the southern tropical islands of Okinawa. Most visitors will spend at least a week in Japan, but two weeks is ideal if not longer. Obviously, you can’t see it all in two weeks but it’s enough to scratch the surface and realize another visit to Japan is necessary.

Japan has several international airports, most visitors will arrive via Haneda or Narita International Airports in Tokyo, but Kansai International Airport near Osaka is also a good option. Japan has great public transportation, so visitors can easily rely on trains to get from city to city.

Many visitors’ itineraries include Tokyo and Kyoto. Although these cities are a must, there is so much more to see, especially in June. Head to the Japanese Alps near Nagano for some fresh mountain air or visit the island of Okinawa. June is a great time to visit Okinawa as the waters are warm enough to snorkel and dive. Hiroshima and Kobe are also other interesting cities to visit.

Japan has something to offer for everyone thus making it one of the best countries to visit in June. In June, hiking is popular in the mountains, but if staying in the city, many travelers come to see the temples, Japanese gardens, and experience the Japanese culture and food.

Japan is not an expensive destination. Dining is very reasonable and hotel accommodations are cheaper than expected. Taking the shinkansen (bullet train) can be pricey but the local trains are cheap.

Singapore

By Viola of Away to the City

The city-state of Singapore is located in Southeast Asia and offers futuristic urban design, warm weather and tasty street food – it’s the perfect location for a June getaway! Singapore’s proximity to the equator gives it a tropical climate, and June marks the beginning of its dry season. Expect sunny skies with occasional refreshing showers. Singapore is one of the best countries to visit in June.

Changi Airport provides the easiest access to Singapore. It consistently ranks as one of the world’s best airports. In addition, Singapore has an efficient public transport network, so you won’t need to rent a car.

To make the most of your trip, search for hotels near popular areas like Marina Bay, Bugis, City Hall, Esplanade or Raffles Place.

Singapore provides endless attractions and experiences. For a lush urban experience, stop by Gardens by the Bay with its futuristic Supertrees. Afterwards, head over to Marina Bay Sands observation deck to see Singapore’s iconic skyline. Another must-see in Singapore is Boat Quay, which was once a bustling center of Singapore’s port and has been transformed into an entertainment district. Check out Chinatown and its delicious delicacies sold from local hawker centers and consider taking a food tour there.

The city-state is considered one of the world’s most expensive cities. For optimal enjoyment, it’s best to have an appropriate budget. That being said, exploring it on a tight budget is definitely possible by using options like hawker centers for affordable meals or staying in less touristy and cheaper neighborhoods such as Tiong Bahru. There are also plenty of free activities in Singapore to keep you busy while visiting.

Consider booking your visit over 4-5 days. While its main highlights could be experienced in 2-3 days, extra days give you the opportunity to explore more of its sights and experience the city-state’s diverse cuisine.

Kyrgyzstan

June is a fantastic month to visit Kyrgyzstan. As it’s summer, the weather will be great, the high mountain pastures free of snow and the yurt camps will be open, offering tons of interesting adventure and cultural activities for the intrepid traveler.

Getting to Kyrgyzstan is relatively easy, with multiple flights arriving daily at Bishkek’s Manas International Airport. The biggest transit points are Istanbul and Dubai, so if you’re coming from Europe, it’s convenient and affordable.

To get the most out of Kyrgyzstan, you should aim for a minimum of 2 weeks in the country. Of course, if you have more, that’s always better, and you could easily spend a whole month exploring all the wonderful things the country has to offer.

Getting around Kyrgyzstan is pretty straightforward. Public transport is easy to take, so fortunately, a car isn’t needed. However, should you choose to travel by private car, car rental services (with or without a driver) are abundant.

Kyrgyzstan has many beautiful regions. The most stunning, and most popular, is Karakol in the northeast. This region is the gateway to the Tian Shan Mountains, home to Kyrgyzstan’s most dramatic landscapes.

One of the most iconic activities in Kyrgyzstan is going on a horse trek to Song Kul Lake. You can spend days by this high-altitude lake, sleeping in yurt camps and learning about Kyrgyzstan’s rich nomadic culture.

Kyrgyzstan is very budget-friendly. Accommodation is very good value and for $20-30/night you can find a nice room with an en-suite bathroom. Food, transportation and organized activities are likewise cheap and good value.

English is not widely spoken in Kyrgyzstan, so it pays off to learn the Cyrillic alphabet before going. This way, you can read menus at restaurants and the destinations on mini buses. Kyrgyzstan is one of the best countries to visit in June.

Georgia

By Joanna of The World in My Pocket

Georgia is a great summer destination to be explored in June. Located in Eastern Europe, Georgia is yet to be discovered by the hoards of tourists, which makes it a great place to visit if you don’t like crowds.

There are several reasons to visit Georgia in June. Firstly, the weather will be great – sunny but not overly warm. In June it is easy to visit all parts of the country, even the high mountains which are very hard to access in winter. With the arrival of the warm weather, Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, buzzes with locals enjoying dining at outdoor terraces and spending time outside. Don’t miss attending a traditional Georgia supra at a local family or at one of the vineyards in Kakheti region.

Because getting to Georgia is not that straightforward and you will probably need to have a layover in Istanbul to get here, it is recommended to spent one to two weeks in Georgia. Explore Tbilisi for a couple of days, then head over to Batumi, for a few days in the sunshine. From there, embark on the mountain road leading to Mestia, for a few days of hiking in the Caucasus Mountains.

Public transport in Georgia is good and inexpensive. You don’t really need to hire a car to move around. The mountain roads are hard to navigate on your own, and it’s always better to either hire a driver or rely on the public minibuses, which are driven by drivers who have plenty of experience here.

If you are spending only one week in Georgia, then it’s advisable to stay in Tbilisi and do day trips from here. There are plenty of great places nearby to explore. If you are spending two days, then you can move around, going to Batumi as well as to Mestia.

There are plenty of things to do in Georgia, from exploring the amalgam of different architecture in Tbilisi to sunbathing at the Black Sea or hiking to the highest permanent settlement in Europe, Ushguli.

Georgia is a relatively inexpensive country, with good hotels averaging at 30-40 euros a night. Travelling by taxi in Tbilisi is very affordable as well, with a trip to the airport costing less than 10 euros.

Best Countries to Visit in June: Africa

Egypt

A pyramid and a sphinx. #traveltheworld #summertime #summertravel #june

Egypt is one of the best countries to visit in June. While the June weather can be quite warm, visiting toward the beginning of June, you will beat the summer crowds and have cheaper prices than during peak season.

You will want to spend at least a week visiting Egypt, but up to two weeks if you have the time. There is no need to rent a car as you can easily take the train in between cities or hire a driver for a low cost.

When visiting Egypt, you will want to spend time in Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor. If you have more time, add in some time around the Red Sea such as in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh or visit Alexandria.

In Cairo, make sure to visit the Great Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, and take a day trip to Sakkara. When spending time in Luxor, the main highlight will be the Valley of the Kings and King Tut’s Tomb. From Aswan, you will want to take a day trip to Abu Simbel.

Visiting Egypt is not too expensive, especially if you take public transportation and choose cheaper hotels. Uber is widely available in Cairo and is the easiest way to get around. Hiring a private guide and driver is the best and most efficient way to get around Egypt.

Morocco

By Kelly of Travel Morocco Today

“One of the best countries to visit in June is Morocco. This is the perfect time of year to go hot air ballooning in Marrakech since winds are minimal and cloud cover is low. You can also visit Essaouira and attend the world-famous Gnaoua Festival. It’s a four day event held at the end of the month that celebrates traditional Moroccan music. Afterward, cool off and do a bit of surfing at the town’s main beach. Or, head to Chefchaouen and do a fun hike to Akchour Waterfall.

Try to spend at least 10 days in the country. This will give you plenty of time to explore Marrakech, Fes, Essaouira, and Chefchaouen. To visit, fly into Marrakech Menara airport. As you make your way across the country, you can use the train or CTM buses to quickly travel between cities. So, no car is needed.

When possible, try to book hotels, or traditional riads, inside the Medina of the city. This is the old town area. It is usually very walkable, filled with local attractions, and is a fun place to explore. You also won’t need to worry too much about your budget since Morocco is a very affordable country. In fact, you can enjoy a meal for $5.00 per person. However, for 10 days budget between $1000.00 and $2000.00, depending on the hotels and activities you book.

Vanuatu

By Raksha of Solo Passport

Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, Vanuatu is famous for its pristine beaches, stunning landscapes, and World War II shipwrecks. With warm temperatures and minimal rainfall, this tiny island country is ideal for travel in June. As the dry season starts, travelers can indulge in outdoor activities and enjoy the sunny days.

The suggested duration is at least a week to experience what the country has to offer and make the most of it. During that time, you can explore, relax, and enjoy the island’s culture and activities.

The best way to get to Vanuatu is by flying into the capital city of Port Vila. Some cruises on the Pacific Ocean have Vanuatu as their port stop. While a car is not required when on the island, renting one at the airport can be handy, especially when exploring the remote parts of the island.

Hideaway Island is a short boat ride from the mainland. This secluded and private island is available only to hotel guests. If you are looking for budget-friendly options, there are many guesthouses in Port Vila.

Vanuatu has plenty to offer, especially for adventure enthusiasts. There are many diving sites around the islands where scuba divers of all levels can enjoy themselves. Many hiking trails take travelers through dense forests and cascading waterfalls. If you are not into adventurous activities, you can still enjoy the island by attending traditional ceremonies and trying out the local cuisine.

Vanuatu caters to all kinds of travelers, including budget travelers. While staying at island resorts might be expensive, you can still travel around by staying at local homestays or guesthouses and eating local food. Vanuatu is one of the best countries to visit in June.

New Zealand

By Cassie of Cassie the Hag

June is a fantastic time to visit New Zealand’s South Island. In the Southern Hemisphere, June to August are the Winter months, transforming the country’s marvelous Southern Alps into pristine snow-capped mountains. This is also when ski season kicks off, with Queenstown and Wanaka being among the most popular spots for winter sports. Top ski resorts include Cardrona and Treble Cone.

If you prefer to stay in one place and do day trips, Queenstown is the best place to stay.  This is a good option if you’re either coming to hit the slopes or only have a few days in the country. From here, tons of tours run throughout the season, including the not-to-be-missed breathtaking Milford Sound cruise. Other top June activities include taking a gondola up to Bob’s Peak, gliding across Lake Wakatipu on a cruise, or warming up at Onsen Hot Pools.

If you have a week or more in New Zealand, a car is recommended to make the most of this winter wonderland. You will need to travel with snow chains and I recommend learning how to fit them in advance.

For an epic South Island road trip, you can cover Queenstown, Wanaka, Tekapo, Mount Cook and Milford Sound in just over a week, though I’d recommend at least two. June is also when the sperm whales begin their annual migration off the coast of Kaikoura, and you can also see hector’s dolphins, fur seals, and blue whales.

Unfortunately, most of the country’s big hikes are closed for the winter, though there are plenty of smaller hikes to do. I hiked Mount Cook’s famous Hooker Valley track during Winter and it was stunning. Nevertheless, New Zealand is still one of the best countries to visit in June.

New Zealand is expensive to travel to, although budget travelers can save money by staying in hostels or camping and cooking their own food.
