Additionally, October is a great time to visit Lake Tahoe if you love events since you can check out Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson. If you want a quick taste of Santa Cruz, then 1-2 days will suffice; however, if you’re looking to explore the attractions further and relax, then I suggest a 4-5 day stay. A rough estimate for a 4-5 day stay in Santa Cruz in October, including accommodation, meals, transportation, and activities, could range from $800 to $1500 per person.
There is public transit in Santa Cruz, including the Santa Cruz Metro and Santa Cruz Trolley, that accesses many popular attractions. However, if you wish to visit the natural surroundings nearby, then you will require a car.

You will also have less tourists, which means you will have a better chance of getting a table at the best Mendocino restaurants. Also, the town is so small, you will appreciate having fewer people to share it with.
You’ll also get a better deal on a hotel room or vacation rental. Hotels are about 20% less expensive than in the summer. Stay close to downtown at the Brewery Gulch Inn or the Stanford Inn—you can walk to town from both.
Stroll around the quaint village and pop into the art galleries and boutiques. Founded in 1852 as a logging community, you’ll find evidence throughout the town of its rich history. You can walk the entire town in a couple of hours, but you’ll want to stay at least a couple of days the experience the beauty of the area.

For one, there is stunning displays of aspens that turn vibrant gold in early October around the town’s Green Creek and Summer Meadows Roads. For another, it’s the perfect time to explore its natural hot springs, like Travertine and Buckeye Hot Springs, and enjoy its cozy, warm waters in the chilly air.
To get to Bridgeport, the most affordable way to get there is to fly into San Francisco and drive east for four hours and 15 minutes. Alternatively, if you can find cheap tickets, Sacramento is just a three and a half hour drive to Bridgeport.
Spend at least a weekend in Bridgeport, so you can enjoy the local hot springs, check out a nearby hiking trail or two, and explore its charming downtown, with Wild Western vibes.

The eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains are the dry side of the mountain range, but don’t let that dissuade you from visiting because this range is bursting with pine forest and deciduous trees, which are beautiful in the fall. The Eastern Sierra range is served by Highway 395, and the best of the region’s fall color can be found along the highway in a 100-mile range between Bridgeport and Bishop.
There are many steep canyons and streams which feed a large population of cottonwood, willow and aspen trees. Starting in late September, the temperatures cool down, and the trees explode with color in the Eastern Sierra.
What’s great about this region is that the canyon elevations range from 4,100-9,600 feet. The higher elevations start changing color early, and then the leaf peeping gradually flows downhill later in the season. This means that you don’t need to time your trip perfectly, just pick a time in early to mid-October and travel up and down the canyons until you find the fall color.
If you’re motivated, you can cover a lot of ground in a long weekend. As for where to stay — if it’s early in the fall color transition, we recommend basing yourself in a higher elevation town, such as Bridgeport or June Lake. If later, then choose Mammoth Lakes or Bishop.
In addition to the fall color, you can also spend some time soaking in the region’s many hot springs, some quirky local museums, and visiting Bodie Ghost Town State Historic Park.

Channel Islands National Park

You would need to take a private boat or a public ferry to get to the Channel Islands. The ferries depart from either Ventura or Oxnard harbors. Prices start at $63 per adult for a round trip. The national park is free to visit.
Santa Cruz Island is perfect for a day trip. The ferry trip to Scorpions Anchorage lasts an hour each way, which leaves you plenty of time to explore the island. You may see dolphins and harbor seals during the ferry ride.
Hiking and wildlife viewing are the main activities on the island. Start with the Cavern Point and then proceed to Potato Harbor. Be on the lookout for island foxes. They are about the size of a cat. Some are not afraid of humans and might beg you for food. Resist the temptation to pet or feed them!
If you are an experienced and fast hiker, continue to Scorpion Canyon, Little Scorpion Anchorage, or even Smugglers Cove. These hikes are longer and more strenuous. You would need to bring your own food and snacks since there are none on the island. Water and restrooms are available.
There are a couple of solid lodging options in Ventura and Oxnard. Consider suites at Channel Island Shores in Oxnard. If you enjoy camping, you could camp on the island overnight. Take a ferry back to the city the next day.

If you’re traveling to California in October, you can’t miss the beach town of Santa Barbara. If you visit Santa Barbara in October, make sure to visit Pianos on State, Santa Barbara Vintners Festival, or the Santa Barbara Harbor & Seafood Festival. Not to mention, October is the month of the wine harvest!
To get the most out of Santa Barbara, you’ll want to make sure to spend 2-3 days in town. This is perfect for strolling State Street, wine tasting in the Funk Zone, spending time on Stearns Wharf, renting GoCars (or “little yellow cars”) to drive to Montecito, and perhaps even making a day trip to the neighboring town of Solvang and Los Olivos.
While you don’t need a car to explore Santa Barbara, you might want to consider renting one if you want to explore the area around Santa Barbara. If you don’t want to rent a car, both Uber and Lyft operate in Santa Barbara.
