Colombo, the capital of the amazing country of Sri Lanka, is often overlooked when planning a Sri Lanka itinerary, especially when using points. When you visit, you will fly into Colombo to access the rest of the country. I recommend spending at least one day in Colombo to see what the city has to offer and explore this thriving metropolis.

History of Colombo
Colombo’s history dates back to 2,000 years. Around the 700s, Arab traders established a presence in Colombo, where it became a flourishing trading hub. In 1505, the Portuguese arrived and took over. During this time, many fortifications were built, and Christianity became the dominant religion.
Shortly after that, Colombo became the capital of Sri Lanka (then called Ceylon) and developed into a modern capital city. Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. During that period, Colombo continued to grow, blending modern development with colonial heritage. Present-day, it is the island’s economic center with a vibrant mix of cultures.
When to Spend One Day in Colombo
December to April is typically the best time to visit Sri Lanka and spend one day in Colombo. However, that is peak season, so it will be more crowded. We opted to visit during my summer break in July. While it was very hot and humid, the country was not busy at all and there was little rain.
How to Get to Colombo
Bandaranaike International Airport is the main airport in Colombo. All flights to Sri Lanka from other countries will land here. Skyscanner is my favorite way to search for flights. Tickets typically cost around $1000 for a round-trip ticket.

Transportation in Colombo
The best way to get around Colombo is by tuk-tuk. You can either hire one for the day or use Uber. I recommend hiring one for the day. This cost us $10 a person, and he was also our tour guide. The tour took us to all of the main sites in Colombo. You can also book a tour in advance for a little bit higher cost.
