When planning a trip to Texas, many people visit the main cities like Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston as part of their itinerary. However, these cities also make for a great place to base yourself for some day trips around Texas. One day in Waco makes for a fun day to explore some of the history of the area and get some good food.

History of Waco

Waco, Texas, has a rich and complex history that stretches back to the 1800s. The area was originally inhabited by the Waco (Huaco) Native American tribe. In 1849, white settlers established a town on the site after the Waco were forced to relocate, and the settlement was officially incorporated as Waco in 1856.

Its location along the river made it an important hub for trade and transportation. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s further boosted Waco’s economy, helping it become a center for cotton production and commerce in Central Texas.

Throughout the 1900s, Waco experienced both growth and tragedy. Baylor University, which relocated there in 1886, became a cornerstone of the city’s educational and cultural life. However, Waco was also the site of devastating events, including the 1953 tornado that killed 114 people and destroyed much of downtown, marking one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history.

In more recent history, the city gained national attention during the 1993 siege at the Branch Davidian compound outside Waco, a standoff between federal agents and a religious sect that ended tragically. Despite these challenges, Waco has since undergone significant revitalization. Today, it’s known for its blend of historic charm, educational institutions, and growing tourism.

When to Spend One Day in Waco

Spring and fall are the best times to spend one day in Waco. These times will bring mild temperatures and make for a great time to be outdoors.

How to Get to Waco

Waco had a small regional airport: Waco Regional Airport. It is possible to get some flights into that airport. However, I would recommend that you visit Waco as a day trip from Austin or Dallas, as it is much easier and cheaper to get flights into those airports. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from Dallas and 2 hours from Austin. Skyscanner is my favorite way to search for flights.

Transportation in Waco

To get to, from, and around during your one day in Waco, you will want a rental car. Once in Waco, many of the sites are within walking distance of one another. I recommend renting a car through Economy Bookings as it will search all rental car companies for you.
