New York City is one of the best cities in the United States to visit (and my personal favorite). Spending 3 days in New York City is the perfect amount of time to get a good sampling of the city, but definitely spend longer if you have it.
After visiting NYC over 30 times, I still find something new to do each time I visit. This itinerary covers some of the main sites you will want to see during your first trip to New York City and has more touristy things to do. If you want a more history-focused itinerary, check out these historical sites in NYC or check out these awesome things to do in NYC during the wintertime. Make sure to add in the most Instagrammable places of NYC here.
US Ghost Adventures is an awesome company that offers a variety of guided tours and haunted experiences across different cities in the United States. Visitors can learn the compelling history and stories of the paranormal and the city’s darker side. Make sure to check out the variety of tours offered in New York here. They are very affordable too!

History of New York City
New York City officially became a settlement by the Dutch West India Company in 1624, named New Amsterdam. In 1664, the British captured New Amsterdam from the Dutch and renamed it New York. It then became a major port city and trading center.
During the American Revolution, NYC served as a headquarters for the British military. Throughout the coming years, NYC rapidly developed and became a center for immigration and continued to be a major trading hub.
Throughout the 1900s, NYC continued to develop and become industrialized as well as a hotbed for social and political movements. Present day, NYC continues to be one of the most iconic cities in the world.

When to Spend 3 Days in New York City
New York City offers a different experience depending on which season you visit. Although spending 3 days in New York City is fun any time of the year, I recommend visiting in the fall if it is your first visit.
Wintertime after the holidays until early spring, you will find the best deals on hotels. Summer is the most crowded but has the most outdoor activities. Fall and early winter offer a festive season in the city with Holiday decorations or fall colors.

How to Get to New York City
New York City has three major airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia International Airport, and Newark International Airport. JFK usually has the cheapest flights and the most international flights. You can read more about how to get to a from the airports here.
You can also check out these shared transfers.
Transportation in New York City
There is no need to rent a car in New York City. It will just cost you a lot of unnecessary money in parking and rental fees, and it is difficult to get around NYC by car.
Instead, opt to use public transportation. You can buy a week-long subway pass for $33. This pass is good on all subways and buses. Google Maps will tell you exactly what subways to use for your destination.

The High Line

Cost: Free
Hours: 7am-10pm
Work off the pizza with a stroll along the High Line. The High Line is a public park that offers views of the west side. This 1.45 mile pathway stretches from the Chelsea Market to Hudson Yards. It was founded in 1999 to prevent the elevated rail track from being demolished.
I recommend starting at the Chelsea Market side for some shopping or light eats. Also nearby the Chelsea Market is Little Island, a public park that is located at Pier 55 over the Hudson River.
Then, you will end at Hudson Yards, where you can take in the interactive sculpture the Vessel. It is temporarily closed, but you can still view the outside of it and walk through the bottom. Also in this area is the Edge NYC, the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere.
