Spend at least 3 to 4 days in San Francisco, and more if you are using it as a base for several day trips. You can fly into the city or take a road trip to the west coast. But you needn’t rent a car in San Francisco. There are plenty of public transport options plus parking is difficult within the city.
No trip to San Francisco is complete without the iconic Golden Bridge. If you drive to Fort Baker, you can get some of the best views of this bridge. If you are traveling with kids, take them to the California Science Center and Exploratorium. Fisherman’s Wharf is another great and lively area. The Ferry building with its tall clock tower is not to be missed. You can see the antics on sea lions and take a ferry for the Alcatraz Prison Tour.

August is when the weather is mild and pleasant, with a gentle ocean breeze. The temperature usually ranges between 57 and 69°F. Summer is the peak season in Big Sur, but this is when the height of the crowds will already start to dissipate.
The easiest way to get there is by flying into San Francisco and driving 2 hours from there. Another major city that’s close by is Los Angeles, although the drive up will take twice as long, or around 4 hours. Because Big Sur is essentially a long stretch of scenic coastline, I recommend renting a campervan so you can immerse in the landscape and save money on accommodation. While you’re at it, consider planning your visit as part of a bigger West Coast or California road trip.
In terms of things to do, don’t miss the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, which is home to seven trekking trails that take you through hidden coves, gorgeous waterfalls, creeks, and redwood forests. You can even try scuba diving here. Another must-visit for hiking is the Andrew Molera State Park. This part has flatter terrains, so there are fun activities like horseback riding and biking, and it’s a great spot for surfing. Make sure to stop by Pfeiffer Beach and Sand Dollar Beach.

If you’re looking for an underrated gem and one of the best places to visit in California in August, head to Castle Crags State Park in Castella, near Mount Shasta.
This beautiful state park is one of the best things to do in Northern California, with epic hiking trails, opportunities to swim and kayak in the Sacramento River, and 6,000 food granite spires that rival those at Yosemite.
There’s several excellent hikes in the park, the most famous of which is the Castle Crags Trail, which takes you up to the park’s namesake crags and, on a clear day, offers jaw-dropping views of Mount Shasta. For a more beginner-friendly hike, head, instead, to the Vista Point Overlook, a gentle trail that takes you to a beautiful viewpoint.
You can explore most of Castle Crags in just a day or two, although there’s plenty to see in the surrounding Mount Shasta area, like the Castle Crags Wilderness or McCloud or Burney Falls. Plus, one of the best things about this area is that, given that most of its activities are outdoor adventures, it’s a pretty affordable getaway!
