40+ Things to Do During Two Days in San Francisco: A Fun Weekend Getaway

(Last Updated On: November 30, 2023)

San Francisco might be my favorite of the three major cities in California. Although San Diego consistently has the best weather and Los Angeles has a ton of fun and unique things to do, San Francisco is set on a gorgeous bay and is super easy to get around. Spending two days in San Francisco is the perfect amount of time to hit all of the main sites and eat at some amazing places.

History of San Francisco

The first inhabitants of the San Francisco area date back to 3000 BC. The Ohlone people set up small villages and were there until the Spanish began to arrive in 1769. In 1776, the Spanish Presidio and mission was established by Juan Bautista de Anza.

In 1821, California gained independence from Mexico, which saw the ending of the mission system and the land began to be owned by private individuals. 1849 brought about the gold rush and a flood of settlers to the area. California became a state shortly after that in 1850.

Throughout the next several years, San Francisco began to be built into a large city with many people coming to settle in the area. In 1906, a huge earthquake hit San Francisco and demolished 75% of the city.

The city was rebuilt and during the Great Depression, a lot of public works projects were created in the area. Throughout the years, San Francisco has continued to grow and has become a hot spot for tech startups.

When to Spend Two Days in San Francisco

San Francisco in the summertime is gorgeous, but also when it is the most crowded. If you do not mind a bit chillier weather and some rain, San Francisco is less busy in the wintertime and prices are usually a lot cheaper. I love spending two days in San Francisco during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the city is not as busy.

How to Get to San Francisco

There are three major airports in the San Francisco Bay area: San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Oakland International Airport, and San Jose International Airport. The most popular airport is SFO. This is where many of the international flights come in and has the most frequent flights. However, prices to fly into SFO tend to be more expensive than Oakland. We will usually fly into Oakland due to finding better prices there and it is sometimes easier to get to Downtown from there.

San Jose should be used as a last resort because it is about an hour from there into Downtown San Francisco.

From SFO, you can take the yellow (Antioch) or red (Richmond) BART lines to Downtown San Francisco. It takes about 30 minutes and will cost $8-$10.

From Oakland, you can take the blue or green (Daly City) BART lines to Downtown. It will take about 45 minutes and costs around $14.

Transportation in San Francisco

You do not need a car to get around San Francisco unless you are planning on heading to some of the places outside of San Francisco such as Napa, Sonoma, Muir Woods, Monterey, or Pinnacles National Park.

To get around the city, you can opt to take public transit options such as BART or buses. Both are very easy to use and you can even get a reusable card (Clipper Card) to load up. I recommend getting a day pass for $5 if you plan on using it a lot. Also, a fare is good for 2 hours, so you can hop on and off as many times during that time if necessary.

Where to Stay in San Francisco

Union Square is the most central location to stay in San Francisco. You have a ton of restaurants and shops within walking distance. The Financial District is also near Union Square and sometimes tends to have cheaper prices. I have stayed at the Westin Union Square, the Courtyard Union Square, Hilton Union Square, Parc 55 San Francisco, and the Hilton Financial District. All of them were great hotels and locations.

Things to do During Two Days in San Francisco

There are an array of sites to see during two days in San Francisco. The following San Francisco Itinerary covers some of the main sites and best places to eat during a weekend in San Francisco.

GoCity

GoCity offers a ton of different sightseeing passes for cities around the world. These passes allow you to visit the best of each city for one low price, rather than paying individually for each attraction. I have used it in several cities around the world and would recommend getting a GoCity pass! Check out the options for the San Francisco GoCity pass here.

Ferry Building Farmer’s Market

Hours: Tues/Thurs: 10am-2pm, Sat: 8am-2pm

The Ferry Building Farmer’s Market is the perfect spot to start two days in San Francisco. It is well known throughout the country and has a ton of amazing vendors. I highly recommend grabbing breakfast from LoJo’s Tacos and a coffee from Proyecto Diaz Coffee. Plan to spend a little bit of time walking around the market. Make sure to check out the architecture and inside of the Ferry Building.

Pier 39

Hours: Varies by place

Next, head to Pier 39. You can hop on the tram from the Ferry Building to get here. Although this is a very touristy stop, Pier 39 has tons of shops and restaurants. I recommend bypassing all of those and heading straight for the viewing platform where you can see the Sea Lions that hang out along the docks in the area.

San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park

Lunch at Boudin Bakery

Cost: $

Hours: Sun-Fri: 8am-9pm, Sat: 8am-10pm

Although Boudin may be a super touristy place and have many locations across California, I love stopping here for a bread bowl, especially on a cold day. They are known for their sourdough bread and chowder. Visitors can also walk through the factory and museum to learn about the sourdough making process.

If you want more authentic clam chowder or lobster rolls, there are a ton of smaller places scattered along the waterfront that you can also choose to have lunch at.

Golden Gate National Recreation Area

The beach in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. #bayarea #sanfran #goldengatebridge #sf

Hours: Varies by Location

Golden Gate National Recreation Area protects 82,000 acres of land along the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County. It contains many different attractions within the park. The highlight of course is the Golden Gate Bridge. You can choose which stops to hit up or plan to do them all. Keep in mind visiting all of them is a lot of walking and will take all afternoon! Viewing the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the best things to do during two days in San Francisco.

Golden Gate Bridge

There are a ton of different viewpoints of the Golden Gate Bridge around the San Francisco area. Crissy Field, Marshall’s Beach, and Battery Spencer are some of my favorite spots to take in the Bridge. You can also opt to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge which is always a fun experience.

Crissy Field

This public recreation area has views of the Golden Gate Bridge, nice walking trails, and a large beach. Many people opt to have a picnic here or sit and relax for a while. On a clear day, you can also catch some views of the San Francisco skyline from here.

The Presidio

The Presidio is a 1,500-acre park that is part of the Golden Gate NRA. It has many hiking trails, a golf course, and several scenic overlooks. It was once part of US Army land. Present-day, you can take in views of the Golden Gate Bridge, visit the Crissy Field Center, take in special events. Within the area is also the Walt Disney Family Museum and the Palace of Fine Arts.

Marshall’s Beach

Marshall’s Beach offers some of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge. This hidden beach requires a half mile hike down the cliffside to access it. It is a bit of a rock hike down, but not too strenuous of a hike. Plan to spend at least an hour here as you will want time for pictures on the beach.

We LOVED SF when we visited. This is a great itinerary and I love that you included so many free things to do and visit, as it can get expensive. We especially loved hanging out with the sea lions on the pier 🙂

I’ve been to SF a few times on weekend whirlwind trips, and feel like I’ve seen all the big sites and want to explore more in-depth next time I visit. I haven’t been to a museum yet in SF and would love to budget enough time to spend a day or two lost in a museum or even the botanical gardens.
