How to Apply for a Passport

There is one VERY important item you need when you travel internationally: Your Passport! Although it may seem like a daunting task, it is actually quite simple.

Step 1: Fill out an application.

Step 2: Collect the documents you will need.

  • Citizenship Evidence (Must have original/certified copy AND a photocopy of front and back)
    • Birth Certificate
    • Undamaged expired passport
  • Identification (Must have a photocopy of the front and back)
    • Driver’s License
    • Passport Card

  • Passport Photos (I always get mine through Costco. They are inexpensive!)

Step 3: Figure out your payment.

  • New Passports cost $110 plus a $35 first time acceptance fee ($145 total)
  • You can pay by Check or Money Order. Credit or Debit Cards are not usually accepted.
  • If applying at a Passport Agency, they may take a credit or debit card.

Step 4: Submit your application!

  • You may be able to apply at your local post office or library. The library in my city takes appointments!

Processing time is normally 4-6 weeks. If you need your passport faster, you can expedite it and it takes about 2-3 weeks and costs an additional $60. For a same day passport, you must go to a passport agency.
