Day 1: Arrive in Milan, transfer to Rome (3-hour train ride)

If it is cheaper to buy a round trip airplane ticket, buy a round trip ticket into Milan. If not, buy a one-way ticket to Rome. Opt to take a 3-hour bus or train ride to Rome from Milan. Then, spend your first day in Italy adjusting to the time, and wandering the bustling streets of Rome. Grab a delicious dinner of pizza or pasta in one of the piazzas. Later, get acquainted with the city and take an evening stroll through Rome.

Day 2: Rome

Today, visit some of the historical sites of Rome. If you want to spend two days in Rome, follow this lesson plan.

Day 4: Rome to Florence (1-hour 32-minute train ride)

Enjoy a scenic ride out of Rome to the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, Florence! Depart later in the day if you would prefer more time in Rome, or early in the morning if you want more time in Florence.

Spend the day seeing the sites of the Renaissance. Make sure to pre-book tickets to the Galleria Dell’a Accademia to view Michelangelo’s David. Take the climb to the top of the Duomo if you dare!

Day 6: Florence

Leave the hustle of Florence and take a day trip to the wine tasting region of Tuscany, see the leaning tower of Pisa, or visit one of the smaller medieval towns such as Siena, Lucca, or San Gimignano.

Day 7: Florence to Venice (2-hour and 2-minute train ride)

Leave in the morning to take a relaxing train ride to Venice. Spend the afternoon getting lost wandering the narrow canals of Venice. You could also spend more time in Florence and take an evening train to Venice.

Day 8: Venice

Visit the main sites of Venice: the Rialto Bridge, Piazza San Marco, Doge’s Palace, Saint Mark’s Basilica, and the Galleria Dell’Accademia. If you have time, take a cruise around the canals or visit the colorful island of Burano.
