Best Places to Visit in California in December: Northern California
Some of the best places to visit in California in December are in Northern California. This is a more outdoorsy and unique area.
Point Lobos

By Alyssa of An Apple a Plane
Point Lobos is an amazing off-the-beaten-path and one of the best places to visit in California in December. Its mild temperatures year-round make it an ideal winter location full of sunshine and away from the snow. Keep your parkas at home!
Its glittering turquoise waters beneath the cliffside with secret beaches is something fresh out of a fairytale. After spending an afternoon hiking one of its many trails, visitors can sit at a bench along the trails for a calm picnic enjoying the natural views.
Driving is the best way to get to Point Lobos Natural Reserve. The park is open year-round daily from 8:00am-5:00pm. It costs $10 to park inside of the park but is free to park on the street. Parking inside of the park is limited. Spending one afternoon or full day at the park is sufficient.
Point Lobos is exceptionally ideal due to appealing to a variety of budgets. Visitors can make this a luxury vacation by staying in Monterey or keep it budget friendly by opting to stay at one of the many local campgrounds.
Many visitors in this region stay in Monterey or Carmel By The Sea often not realizing the accessibility of the local natural preserves a few miles away. Its prime location at the start of Big Sur, mild temperatures, and adventurous activities make it a great destination to visit in December.
Napa Valley

by Hannah of Plate & Compass
Napa Valley is a fun destination to visit any time of the year, but it is especially one of the best places to visit in California in December. The peak season is May through October, so a visit in December means more affordable rates and smaller crowds. Napa isn’t the cheapest city around, but this gives you a chance to book that nicer hotel you’ve wanted to try or stay closer to the wineries.
It also means sweater weather! Something about pulling out all my favorite fall/winter clothes and sipping cabernet in a vineyard or at Castillo di Amoroso’s castle overlooking the vineyards just feels right. You can do Napa in a weekend, but 3-4 full days is preferable for the best experience.
Fly into a major airport like Oakland or San Francisco, where you can get a cheap rental car. You’ll need a car to drive around the 30-mile stretch of 400+ wineries and restaurants that make up the Napa Valley experience.
Calistoga is a great area to stay for a quaint small-town vibe and proximity to wineries and hot springs. Many Calistoga hotels and resorts actually have pools and spas heated by the hot springs. However, Napa is a bigger and more affordable city with more nightlife and things to do like Oxbow Market.
The winter months are perfect for a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train. You can see and experience the beauty of Napa Valley from the warmth of the cozy train car. Choose from brunch, afternoon tea, or dinner trains. Some reservation options do include winery visits as well!
The food scene in Napa is just about as popular as its world-class wines! Several Thomas Keller restaurants and other top-rated spots are found in the small town of Yountville, near the center of Napa Valley. Be sure to reserve brunch at Ad Hoc, dinner at RH, and a cocktail by the fire at Goose and Gander downstairs bar. Go pack your best sweaters and go plan a bougie on a budget winter getaway in Napa. Cheers!

Lake Shasta

By Anu of Destination Checkoff
Lake Shasta is a lesser-known destination in Northern California and a hidden gem, making it one of the best places to visit in California in December. Although it is cold in Shasta Lake in December, it does not typically snow here, and daytime temperatures are in the mid-50s.
This makes it ideal for outdoor recreational activities. If you’re looking for a serene winter escape, Shasta Lake provides a quieter and less crowded getaway in December. The cooler temperatures add a cozy touch to the surroundings, and the lake’s natural beauty takes on a serene, tranquil vibe.
There are many awesome things to do in Shasta Lake and nearby. In December, you can explore hiking, renting a houseboat on the lake, and visiting the Lake Shasta Caverns, a natural wonder. To reach the caverns, you have to take a boat ride, followed by a bus ride. There are guided tours available year-round to view the magnificent limestone formations inside the caverns.
The nearby town of Redding has some great attractions, like the unique Sundial Bridge with a glass deck and the Turtle Bay Museum, which is great for families.
Driving is the most convenient way to get to Shasta Lake, especially in December. Having a car is recommended to explore the nearby areas. A 2 to 3-day trip is sufficient to explore Shasta Lake. Shasta Lake is an off-the-beaten-path destination and typically not very expensive. The only major expense will be the accommodation. The Inn at Lake Shasta is a great place to stay in a natural forest setting.
Lake Tahoe

By Kristin of Tiny Footsteps Travel
For a snowy winter destination, consider Lake Tahoe in December. Lake Tahoe receives an average snowfall of 34 inches in December, making it an excellent choice for those who want to do winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. There are a few world-class ski resorts located right in Lake Tahoe, including Palisades Tahoe where the 1960 Winter Olympics were held.
The December weather in Lake Tahoe sits at a daytime average of 43 degrees Fahrenheit as a high, which means it’s cold enough for ice skating. There is a skating rink in Heavenly Village where you can skate before warming up to a hot chocolate or coffee at one of the many cafés.
Consider spending at least 3 days in Lake Tahoe in order to have time for winter sports as well as winter activities in Heavenly Village. It really is one of the best places to visit in California in December. Most tourists get to Lake Tahoe by flying into the Reno airport. From there, it’s a 45-minute drive to North Lake Tahoe and 90 mins to South Lake Tahoe. Those who live within a few hours tend to drive. The route to Lake Tahoe is a scenic drive from many destinations as you pass the Sierra Nevada mountains.
A car is recommended in Lake Tahoe so that you can easily get to and from attractions. Be aware that snow tires or snow chains are an absolute must as the roads can get deep with snow. Also, keep in mind that driving to or around Lake Tahoe is mountainous, so there are many winding roads and steep hills. Budget at least $200 USD per day per person in Lake Tahoe, to account for accommodations and food. Add more to this budget if you’re planning to ski.
South Lake Tahoe is a great place to stay in Lake Tahoe in December especially; it’s close to Heavenly Village which will be lit up and festively decorated for the holiday season. There are also lots of restaurants and shopping options in South Lake Tahoe.

San Francisco

By Gladis of Happiness on the Way
December is an ideal month to visit San Francisco and enjoy the holiday festivities. The city is adorned with lights and decorations from the start of the month until Christmas Day. You can witness various December-only events like Macy’s Christmas tree at Union Square, the City Hall’s lights turning green and red, and a holiday cruise under the Bay Bridge lights.
Don’t forget to walk through Golden Gate Bridge at night to see it lit up, attend a holiday concert at Grace Cathedral, and take the special evening tour of Alcatraz. Lastly, complete your holiday experience with Union Square’s ice skating rink.
Stay in the city for 4-5 days to get the full experience and one of the best places to visit in California in December. San Francisco is best experienced by foot. However, public transportation options like BART or cable cars are available for traveling longer distances. You can also book a hop-on, hop-off bus to explore the city. Renting a car is not recommended as parking is costly and traffic can be challenging.
For accommodation, consider Union Square or Fisherman’s Wharf. Both are central and have plenty of shops and restaurants. You will be close to all the Christmas festivities and have easy access to other neighborhoods such as the Mission, Castro, and North Beach.
Despite San Francisco’s reputation as an expensive city, there are many free things to do, including visiting museums, parks, and attractions. SF has free guided historical and architectural walking tours. These are run by local volunteers, so you’ll get insider tips and stories. Visit San Francisco this December and experience the most spectacular time of the year in one of America’s most iconic cities.

Best Places to Visit in California in December: Central California
Central California truely has some hidden gems. Some. ofthe best places to visit in California in December also include Paso Robles and Pinnacles National Park.
San Luis Obispo

By Alanna from Periodic Adventures
San Luis Obispo is one of the best places to visit in California in December because of its great weather, holiday festivities, and unique places to stay.
In San Luis Obispo in December temperatures average in the mid-60s and hit the mid-40s at night. Because the temperatures are still decently warm and there is no snow, you can easily still do all the fun things to do in San Luis Obispo. Visit Sunset Drive In for an old-fashioned movie viewing experience. Check out the Creamery Marketplace in downtown SLO where they have a collection of delicious restaurants! Finally, as you explore, see if you can find the cow sculptures scattered around town that were part of an art installation by CowParade.
In December, don’t miss the Downtown SLO Holiday Parade, the Holiday Treasure Stroll on Monterey Street to support local shops, and the SLO SantaCon, an annual pub crawl where participants dress up as Santa!
You’ll want to spend a weekend in San Luis Obispo and the easiest way to get there is by driving where the nearest airports are 3 hours away at LAX in Los Angeles or SFO in San Francisco. The best place to stay is the iconic Madonna Inn, which has 110 unique rooms. They’re known for their over-the-top décor and in December they transform the inn into a winter wonderland!
Visiting San Luis Obispo is quite affordable for a California destination. Meals cost around $12 per person, public transportation around town is plentiful and costs only $1.50 each way, and many of the activities are free or less than $10. One thing to note as you plan your trip is that San Luis Obispo is both a city and a county. For a longer Central California trip, expand your visit to include cities in San Luis Obispo County like Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, and San Simeon!
Yosemite National Park

By Jessica of Uprooted Traveler
If you’re looking to experience a winter wonderland—or simply see one of the most stunning places in the United States without its infamous crowds, head to Yosemite National Park as it is one of the best places to visit in California in December.
While the higher elevations of the park will be covered in snow, the iconic Yosemite Valley is often snow-free or just receives a light dusting in December, which just makes the stunning landscape look that much more beautiful. Accordingly, some of the most popular trails in the park are still easily accessible, come December, yet with a fraction of the crowds you’d see in the summer.
Similarly, Mariposa Grove, the park’s grove of over 500 sequoia trees, is generally snow-free in December—but when the grove is lucky enough to have snowfall, these ancient giants look even more mystical. Come prepared with a set of snowshoes or microspikes and head down the Mariposa Grove Trail, to hike past the tallest trees in the park (and the most massive species on the planet!).
You could spend months exploring the park, but if you’re just looking to see the highlights, two days will do just fine! Additionally, while it will be a challenge to find any kind of public transport that will take you to the Yosemite Valley, the park’s shuttle, around the most popular sites in the Valley, runs year round. Otherwise, to get to the Valley or around other parts of the park, having a car will definitely make your visit a bit more enjoyable. Getting a self-guided audio driving tour is also a great idea.
For the easiest access to the most popular parts of the park, check out Rush Creek Lodge, near the Big Oak Flat entrance of Yosemite—not only is this cozy lodge incredibly affordable in the wintertime, but you’ll find nice wintertime perks, like a steamy hot tub and free nightly smores!
Getting into the park will run you $35 per private vehicle for a week in the park (or, alternatively, you can present a valid interagency pass). Otherwise, enjoying almost all of the points of interest in the park is totally free!
Big Sur

By Nikki of Inspired Routes
One of the very best places to visit in California in December is Big Sur! This entire region is beautiful year-round due to the dramatic landscapes and cool ocean breeze.
Big Sur is a section of the California Coast along Highway 1 between Carmel-by-the-Sea and San Simeon. It’s located just south of Monterey, with San Jose being the closest international airport to Big Sur. A car is needed on this adventure because there are lots of sights to see along Highway 1.
December is a great time to visit Big Sur because it’s the low season and prices have dipped. Although it’s typically more rainy, with an average of 7 rainy days, average highs of 59, and lows of 50, you’ll still have plenty of time to explore.
There are so many things to do in Big Sur, you’ll want to spend at least a long weekend exploring the area. The drive down the Pacific Coast Highway is an unforgettable one. Definitely plan to see the major sights along the drive, such as the Bixby Creek Bridge, Pfeiffer Beach, McWay Falls and Sand Dollar Beach.
The best way to experience Big Sur is to get accommodations in Carmel-by-the-Sea and further down the highway, so you’re not rushed. Try the Hyatt Carmel Highlands at the start and end of your trip, and the Alila Ventana Big Sur near the south end of Big Sur.
You’ll love this adventure down the California coast. Just be sure to download offline maps and pack plenty of food and drinks – there’s extremely little cell service in Big Sur.
Best Places to Visit in California in December: Southern California
Southern California always offers some of the best places to visit. Disneyland is one of the other best places to visit in California in December.
Anza Borrego Desert State Park

By Monica of This Rare Earth
If you’re looking to visit the more natural landscapes of California, then visiting Anza Borrego Desert State Park during December is the perfect time to explore. The weather is mild, making it a better time to embark on strenuous hikes than the summer’s triple-digit heat.
The best place to stay for easy access to the park is the charming town of Borrego Springs. There are plenty of things to do in Borrego Springs, and the town sits right in the middle of the large state park. Here, you’ll find numerous accommodation options, from rustic resorts to budget-friendly hotels, and there are several tasty restaurants and live music in town, too.
During your visit, you’ll get to see incredible views of rocky badlands and cactus-covered landscapes. If you’re interested in stargazing, December’s clear nights offer an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the dark skies.
In December, the crowds are minimal, meaning that you’ll have a peaceful visit and the trails all to yourself. My favorite trail is the Palm Canyon Trail, which leads to an oasis in the middle of the desert after a moderate trek. If you get lucky, you may even see the famous wild rams that live in the park.
Plan to spend at least two days exploring, because the park and town are expansive. Visitors will need a reliable car to fully explore what Anza Borrego has to offer. The best part is, the park is free to enter, with the exception of a few day-use areas. Overall, this makes for one of the best places to visit in California in December.

Santa Barbara

By Alec of Explore with Alec
There are few places like Santa Barbara in the United States, but it makes for one of the best places to visit in California in December. Known for its surfer vibes, fantastic wine, and all-around magical weather, life on the coast is a 10/10. Plus, thanks to a population of less than 100,000, it doesn’t have the traffic or urgency of a big city. In December, while many other places feel freezing temperatures, Santa Barbara’s weather is shorts and a t-shirt! (Okay, maybe a light jacket too!)
Thanks to the comparably great weather, you can hike in the Santa Ynez mountains, sit on the beach, go whale watching, enjoy the Funk Zone, go wine tasting, surf, kayak or explore the Santa Barbara Mission. After living there for a year, it might be the best place to be in the month of December! For planning your trip, I recommend at least three days here to get a good sense of the town and do enough where you don’t feel like you left something fun out.
December is cheaper for lodging than mid-summer, but it won’t be cheap. If you’re looking for a less expensive option, stay in Ventura and drive 30 minutes up the coast to Santa Barbara to enjoy your days. Once you arrive in Santa Barbara, you’ll realize you’ve found paradise, and it’ll take all your strength not to start looking at Zillow listings to move in!

Malibu

By Catrina of 24 Hours Layover
Malibu is absolutely one of the best places to visit in California in December. It offers a unique winter experience with mild and pleasant temperatures during December, with average temperatures of 65°F. It makes a great escape from colder regions and allows you to enjoy plenty of outdoor activities, including a vineyard tour. Spend 3 or 4 days in Malibu to fully explore the area, take in the coastal scenery, and enjoy the best photo spots in Malibu.
While Malibu may not have winter sports like skiing, it offers its own winter activities and a lovely relaxing beach vibe. Take advantage of the quieter beaches for beachcombing, coastal walks, hikes, and enjoying sunsets. Some days might even be warm enough for swimming or surfing!
In Malibu, you can enjoy several budget-friendly activities, such as hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains, exploring Malibu Creek State Park or visiting the Adamson House. You can also drive along the Pacific Coast Highway for stunning coastal views without spending a dime! To save on food expenses, picnic on the beach or try some of the local food trucks!
As December is the off-season for tourists, it means fewer crowds and lower accommodation prices. This makes it an ideal time for budget-conscious travelers as you can get cheaper vacation rentals, motels, or budget hotels.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for a hostel to save even more on your accommodation, stay in one in Santa Monica and then drive over to Malibu, as the accommodation in Malibu is generally a bit more pricey than in LA.
The nearest airport to Malibu is LAX, 20 miles east. From there, you can rent a car to get to Malibu. The journey should take an hour. Having a car in Malibu definitely makes it easier to explore the region as things are quite spread out!

Riverside

By Gwen of California Family Travel
Located in the heart of Southern California, midway between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, Riverside is a historic city offering a wide array of activities and some truly amazing restaurants, museums, and entertainment venues.
In December you’ll find one more extraordinary attraction – the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa’s Festival of Lights. Thus, Riverside is one of the best places to visit in California in December.
Voted the “Best Public Lights Display” by USA Today, the Festival of Lights is one of the country’s largest holiday lights displays. The event transforms downtown Riverside with more than five million sparkling lights, holiday decorations, animated figures, music, food, and activities. There is even an ice-skating rink in front of City Hall!
While the Festival of Lights spreads throughout downtown, the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa is the center of the action. Established in 1876 as a 12-room guesthouse, the Mission Inn has grown to take up an entire city block and is one of the most beautiful hotels in California. Throughout December, the building is literally covered with Christmas lights, as are the towering palm trees out front. It is truly a sight you need to see with your own eyes!
Like most areas of Southern California, the weather in December is cool but not freezing, creating the perfect setting to get into the holiday spirit and enjoy the nighttime festivities. If you can snag a room, opt to stay at the Mission Inn.
Even when the Festival of Lights is not going on, it is a gorgeous hotel with unique architecture and some of the best restaurants in Riverside. However, prices do tend to soar this time of year. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly place to stay, the nearby Riverside Marriott Hotel or the Riverside Hyatt Place are solid options.
Los Angeles

By Sam of Find Love and Travel
While Los Angeles is known for its sunny summer weather, palm trees, and sandy beaches, this location shouldn’t be overlooked when planning a trip in December. Even just spending a weekend in LA will allow you to enjoy a ton of activities.
Firstly, hiking in Los Angeles during December is a great option for those wanting to get outdoors. Runyon Canyon and Griffith Observatory are 2 great places to do this. You can also hike to the Hollywood Sign, an iconic LA landmark! You would also be remiss to miss walks or bike rides down Venice Boardwalk and exploring the Santa Monica Pier. Or head by Rodeo Drive for some epic Christmas Lights. You might want to consider doing a hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour too.
Furthermore, you may even be able to enjoy some whale watching in late December as migratory Gray Whales make their way along the California Coast. These things all make it one of the best places to visit in California in December.
Los Angeles is easily accessed by plane or by car, depending on your current location. For first-time visitors, you may want to stay in West Hollywood, and for those looking for a more relaxed vacation, Santa Monica is a great area too.
Los Angeles is a more expensive city, but you certainly visit on a budget. The average hotel cost in December is around $400. Food prices vary from around $20 to $30 per day and car rental prices for the day are as low as $35. Even though it is December in Los Angeles, make sure to stay hydrated because it can still be hot and the climate is very dry.

Death Valley

By Jordan of The Homebody Tourist
Nestled in southeastern California, Death Valley National Park is home to epic hikes, unique landscapes, and fun things to do. However, it’s also known for being the hottest place on Earth (yes, in the entire world), which is why it’s one of the best places to visit in California in December.
Las Vegas airport is the closest major airport to the park’s entrance so you will definitely need a car to explore Death Valley. Expect December temperatures to be in the 60s, but do bring layers because it can drop into the 30s. Although you can see most of the major sites in just one day, I would recommend staying right in the park for at least one night. The Ranch at Death Valley is a great option close to the visitor’s center.
While visiting, be sure to check out Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Mosaic Canyon, Badwater Basin, Devil’s Golf Course, Artists Drive, and Golden Canyon. A self-guided audio driving tour is a good option, so you don’t miss any must-see! The hikes and time spent at each spot can vary depending on the time you have available. Be sure to end at least one night watching the sunset from Zabriskie Point! No matter how you choose to spend your time at Death Valley, it is sure to be a favorite California stop in December.
San Diego

By Denise of Chef Denise
San Diego, California is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in California in December. The Mediterranean-like climate is quite mild making it perfect for those who love outdoor activities or exploring by foot.
Between the different neighborhoods of San Diego, there’s so much to see and do for every budget level. Stay a week to give yourself enough time to see the highlights. From some of the most beautiful beaches in California to its world-renown zoo and museums, to its historical downtown, to its amazing food scene and cruises, you’ll be spoiled for choice. It’s the nation’s 8th largest city, after all! This also means the city is very spread out, so having a car will greatly facilitate your travels.
December is the beginning of the whale migration season in San Diego. Magnificent gray whales can be spotted off the coast from several vista points, or you can take a boat excursion for more reliable results of spotting. If you want to see more sea mammals, head to the cliffs of La Jolla and walk the coastal path. You’ll usually find seals at the Children’s Pool beach and sea lions near La Jolla Cove.
La Jolla Village is a posh town with upscale boutiques, restaurants, and hotels. For more budget-friendly places to stay or if you prefer a more urban area, try the Gaslamp District or its neighbor, Little Italy. Both have rich histories and are great hubs for seeing Balboa Park, Old Town, Seaport Village, and Coronado Island. They’re also where the majority of the walking and food tours in San Diego take place.
Of course, December is a very festive time of year in San Diego. Get in the holiday spirit with the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, a top-notch performance of the Nutcracker at the San Diego Civic Theater, and so much more!

Palm Springs

By Haley of Haley Blackall Travel
Palm Springs is one of the best places to visit in California in December for several reasons. Primarily though, Palm Springs is a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors in perfect weather, with average temperatures in the mid-70s.
Palm Springs is a great destination for a short weekend away. Visit the Palm Springs Art Museum, lay by the pool, go hiking in Indian Canyons or hit the many golf courses. If you have more time, I recommend spending at least three days in Palm Springs. This will give you breathing room to also enjoy the surrounding activities like the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, take some amazing pictures, or take a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park.
You can get to Palm Springs by car, plane, or bus. The Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is located just 2 miles from the city center. There are also several bus companies like Flixbus and Greyhound that offer service to Palm Springs from major cities across the country, including Los Angeles.
The best area to stay in Palm Springs is downtown. This is where you’ll find most of the Palm Springs boutique hotels, restaurants, and shops. If you have access to a car (not needed), you can opt to stay in the trendy East Palm Canyon Drive area, just 5 minutes drive from downtown.
You can expect to spend around $100 USD per day on accommodation, food, and activities during your trip in December, depending on the type of trip you are after. Make sure to book your hotel in advance, since the high season in Palm Springs runs from December to April.
