History of Wine in California
The history of wine production dates back to the 1700s when the first vineyards were planted to make wine for the churches and is often referred to as “mission wine”. In the 1800s, the California gold rush brought about a new demand for wine. This is when the areas of Napa and Sonoma were created and some of California’s oldest wineries were founded. Throughout the years, California wine production continued to flourish, even through Prohibition. Present-day, the wine quality continues to improve and grow.
The Best Wine Regions in California: The North Coast
Mendocino

Surrounded by redwood forests, cool Pacific waters, and enveloped in fog, Mendocino wine country is one of the most scenic and best wine regions in California. One of the biggest draws of this wine region is its remote location. Mendocino is California’s northernmost coastal county, located along the border with Oregon. Compared to touristy wine destinations like Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Barbara, Mendocino County wine region feels a lot quieter.
This rugged coastal area has a long history of sustainable and eco-friendly winemaking practices. Most wineries here are owned by private individuals who have pledged to avoid harmful GMO practices in their wine production and avoid pesticides. To see everything for yourself, head to the scenic Anderson Valley and Yorkville Highlands, home to lush vineyards and gorgeous redwood trees.
Among the best wineries in the region are Toulouse Vineyards, Goldeneye Winery, Navarro Vineyards, Yorkville Cellars, and Roederer Estate. Many of the wineries in the region require reservations for a tour, so do not forget to check with a property ahead of your visit.
While Chardonnay is by far the leading type of wine in the region, there is also a number of other types of wine produced here, including Merlot, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Malbec, among others.
Anderson Valley

Anderson Valley near Mendocino is an underrated wine region in Northern California and a hidden gem with great tasting wines. Anderson Valley is about 15 miles long with fewer than 40 wineries. It is a perfect stop if you plan a road trip from San Francisco to Mendocino.
Anderson Valley wineries are not unlike other famous wine regions. Most of the wineries are family-owned, with friendly owners who spend time explaining their wines and winemaking processes with their customers. The wine tasting fees are minimal, and the wines are delicious and affordable compared to other regions and thus one of the best wine regions in California.
Anderson Valley’s foggy, cool microclimate and terroir is ideal for producing Alsatian varieties like Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, and other grape varietals like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Most wineries focus on crisp whites, roses, sparkling wines, and some reds made of Pinot Noir.
For wine tasting, Roederer Estate, which makes sparkling wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, is a great first stop. Another favorite is Navarro Vineyards, a dog-friendly place known for roses, reds from Pinot Noir, and whites made of Gewürztraminer and Riesling. Phillips Hill Winery is another great winery to visit if you love Alsatian whites and reds.
Napa

Napa Valley is most widely known for its lush, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon wines, but the region’s wineries also produce award-winning wines from Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc. There are 16 sub-regions within Napa Valley including Yountville which is home to Thomas Keller’s French Laundry, St. Helena with amazing restaurants and luxurious resorts, Calistoga which is home to the medieval-style Castello di Amorosa and the Stag’s Leap District which is famous for the Silverado Trail.
Round Pound Estate, located in the Rutherford sub-region of Napa is a wonderful winery to visit. In addition to their wine tasting, you can have the most beautiful lunch with wine pairings set in the garden out in the vineyards. It is definitely one of the most unique and relaxing experiences to be had in Napa.
A trip to Napa Valley will not be complete without visiting one of the three Del Dotto Wineries; Historic Del Dotto, Del Dotto Estate, and Piazza Del Dotto. They are famous for their wine caves and you will not experience another wine tasting similar to one at Del Dotto. Insider tip: if you plan to do a wine tasting at Del Dotto, make sure to eat before you go. If golf cinematic history interests you, a visit to Francis Ford Coppola Winery should be on your itinerary. In addition to their wine tastings, you can relax poolside, dine at their full-service restaurant Rustic or browse the Movie Gallery full of authentic movie memorabilia.
California and French Wines have much in common and there is fierce competition between French Winemakers and their American counterparts in Napa Valley. Those new to wine may find the less-acidic Californian wines easier to drink however French winemakers claim that the lower alcohol levels in French wines pair better with meals.
Whichever wines you prefer, Napa Valley is world-renowned for its wines, thus making it one of the best wine regions in California. Napa will not disappoint with endless options and opportunities to discover your next favorite wine.

Sonoma

Sonoma County resides next to the well-known, and some would say, more popular region of Napa Valley. However, do not let that fool you. Sonoma’s vineyards span over 62,000 acres, making it one of the most diverse wine regions in the world and one of the best wine regions in California. Their unique climate produces a wide variety of quality wines. Sonoma is most commonly known for its Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and in some areas Zinfandel. All of which are fantastic!
Besides having incredible wine, what makes Sonoma so special is the atmosphere. When you arrive in Sonoma, you feel like you have been teleported to a different country. You will fall in love with Sonoma’s cascading hills and breathtaking vineyards.
The wineries in Sonoma are more laid back, less crowded than Napa, and most of them are dog friendly. Their wine tastings and lodging tend to be cheaper than Napa as well. There are hundreds of wineries to choose from in Sonoma. However, our personal favorite is Armida winery.
Armida is tucked away on the hillside, with some of the best views of Sonoma. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area, where you can sip wine with panoramic views of their vineyards, a small pond, and their bocce ball court. Around the corner, you can grab a delicious lunch from the deli at Dry Creek General Store. Order it to go and have a picnic at Armida while you enjoy these stunning views. If you are looking for other wineries to add to your visit in Sonoma are Sbragia Family Vineyards and Quivira Vineyards.
The Best Wine Regions in California: The Central Coast
Paso Robles
Paso Robles is one of the best wine regions in California. Located along the Central Coast near San Luis Obispo, it produces delicious wines and has over 200 wineries. Although Zinfandels, Cabernet Sauvignons, and Rhone-style variations are the most popular wines found in the region, Paso Robles has over 60 grape varieties thanks to its optimal growing conditions. Many of the varietals are similar to some French wines.
Some of the best wineries in Paso Robles include Halter Ranch, Sculpterra, and Tablas Creek. At Halter Ranch, it costs $20 for 5 tastings. They produce a lot of French-style wines and their rose is one of my favorites. Sculpterra offers a laid-back atmosphere and is a great place to grab a bottle of wine and bring your own lunch. A tasting here costs $10 for 8 tastings. Tablas Creek costs $15 for 6 tastings. It is a unique stop because it is known for its organic and biodynamic wines.
Paso Robles is one of the best wine regions in California due to its inexpensive wine tastings and it offers a ton of great wines and wineries. It is an easy drive from Los Angeles or San Francisco and an easy place to spend a weekend.
Carmel Valley

Carmel Valley is located in Monterey County roughly 100 miles south of San Francisco. It is a narrow valley running at the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains so in a sense, it has a similar geographical positioning as the famous Napa Valley to the North. Carmel Valley is mostly known for its red wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and red Bordeaux blends. There are over a dozen wineries and tasting rooms in Carmel Valley that offer some really great wines. Since it is a lesser-known wine-growing region of California, it is much less crowded than Napa or Sonoma, thus making it one of the best wine regions in California.
One of our most favorite places for wine tasting in Carmel Valley is Folktale Winery & Vineyards. It has a beautiful European chateau that greets you at the entrance, peaceful gardens, and very nice red wine to taste. We also love their food offering (wood-burning oven pizza and cheese and meats plate are delicious). If you are visiting with kids, you can send them to play a corn hole game in the garden while you enjoy a glass of wine or two. On select weekends Folktale Winery also organizes outdoor concerts.
A visit to Carmel Valley is a great day trip from San Francisco to enjoy with your friends and family.
Santa Barbara

Adequate sun, cool nights, and well-drained fertile soil makes Santa Barbara county one of the best wine regions in California. The Santa Barbara wine region is located between the transverse mountain ranges which results in an ideal climate to produce varieties of high-quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah.
There are over 200 wineries throughout its 16000 acres of vineyards in Santa Barbara County. Most of these beautiful wineries are spread around smaller towns such as Solvang and Los Olivos. It is not possible to cover all the wineries and vineyards in a single visit. So, choose wisely which of the best Santa Barbara wineries to visit. Many produce award-winning wines, have wine tasting rooms, and offer organized wine tours.
Most of these wineries are family-owned and continue their traditional wine-making process which is what I liked most about the Santa Barbara wine region. The organically farmed Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gamay offer the best and unique taste that you will not find anywhere else.
I will highly recommend visiting Pence Vineyards & Winery, Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards, and Whitcraft Winery, and a special mention to Beckmen Vineyards and Winery who are dedicated to organic farming. Edna Valley

Edna Valley, on the outskirts of San Luis Obispo in Central California, is one of the prettiest and best wine regions in California you can visit. With about thirty wineries, many of which have tasting rooms, Edna Valley is a picturesque American Viticultural Area.
The climate of Edna Valley is very conducive to growing cool climate grapes. Edna Valley is known for its chardonnay and pinot noir, and plantings at Edna Valley are dominated by these two varieties.
Syrah is another variety that is grown in Edna Valley, coming in third. Other varietals include Grenache, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon Blanc. Edna Valley has one of the longest growing seasons in California. Since the grapes hang longer on the vines, the wines produced here tend to be more balanced, with a higher level of varietal flavor.
Some vineyards to put on your list for Edna Valley include Chamisal Vineyards, where you can taste their award-winning Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs (and others as well), and Biddle Ranch Vineyard House & Tasting Room, which has a guesthouse where you can stay, as well as a tasting room.
Edna Valley is an idyllic wine-tasting destination. Many tasting rooms have outdoor patios, where you can sip while enjoying views of landscaped gardens nearby and the vineyards and rolling hills beyond. The experience is informal and unpretentious, making for a must-do activity when you visit California’s beautiful Central Coast.
Santa Cruz Mountains

The Santa Cruz Mountains in California is an area that covers Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and San Mateo counties extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west and encompass the highest ridge tops at 3000 feet elevation. It was recognized as an AVA in 1981 but recognized since the 1870s as one of the best wine regions in California.
There are over 200 small vineyard producers and more than 70 wineries of wine grape varieties. Santa Cruz mountains specialties are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet sauvignon, but also you can find Merlot and Zinfandel. There are several vineyards that grow organically and are certified. Most importantly they support sustainable practices for erosion and growing crops. The Santa Cruz mountains have a wine tasting passport to access more than 30 wineries year-round.
There are so many great wineries in the area. Windy Oaks Estate Vineyards and Winery offers delicious Pinot Noir fermented in French Oak barrels and in a beautiful piece of property. Loma Prieta Winery is the largest producer of Pinotage in North America. Another great one is Pelican Ranch Winery with white, red, and rosé wines with fun events during the year. Storrs Winery and Vineyard has a variety of red, white, and rosé that is grown in sustainable, organic, and biodynamic settings.
Ridge Winery has world class Zins and cabernet blends and David Bruce Winery that specialize in Pinots on the Santa Cruz side of the summit. Soquel vineyards has amazing, gorgeous views and a fun testing room, is kid friendly and gorgeous for picnics.
The mountainous terrain creates a microclimate with a unique location overlooking the coastal mountains, Pacific Ocean and renowned Silicon Valley with rich mineral soil. It covers a broad area around 500,000 acres within an hour’s drive from San Francisco and will take several days to visit all the fun tasting rooms.
Livermore

One of the lesser-known and best wine regions in California that nevertheless is worth a visit is Livermore Valley! This wine region is little-known unless you are from the Bay Area or more particularly the East Bay Area, but it is an up-and-coming wine region all the same. It is closer to many people in the Bay Area than Napa or Sonoma and the wines are a fraction of the price, making it a popular weekend getaway from San Francisco.
Livermore Valley is known in particular for its Zinfandels, Cabernets, Syrahs, Merlots, and other big, fruity reds. Livermore gets a lot more sun and a lot less fog than Napa and Sonoma, so their wines are accordingly more fruit-forward and bold. However, rose and white wines are also popular choices, particularly Chardonnay.
The best-known winery in Livermore is Wente, which prides itself on being “the country’s oldest, continuously operated family-owned winery.” They do have delicious wines there, particularly their Chardonnays (for which they are well known) and Merlots.
Personally, my favorite winery is Boa Ventura de Caires Winery. Their wines are delicious for one (particularly their vinho verde-inspired Albariño), but I also love their beautiful tasting room set in a nostalgic old red barn, perfect for snapping photos between sips! Another great choice is Cuda Ridge Wines, which specializes in Bordeaux varietals, particularly their Merlot.
Livermore is particularly known for its Bordeaux varietals, which it excels at, though personally, I find the wines rather different, even though they use the same grapes and have similar terroirs. The climate really makes the difference!
I like Livermore because it is unpretentious, affordable, and down-to-earth. It is all about the wine and the tasting experience, not fancy frills like Napa often entertains, and having a good time!
The Best Wine Regions in California: The Central Valley
Lodi

The Lodi area is one of the most richly diverse and best wine regions in California. Around half an hour’s drive from Sacramento, over 100 different wine varieties are produced here; but the region is definitely best known for its slightly smoky, incredibly fruity Zinfandels. In fact, the Lodi region has long been called the ‘Zinfandel Capital-’ and who doesn’t love a Zinfandel for goodness’ sake!?
Despite its close proximity to Sacramento, Lodi has long been in the shadow of more well-known regions like Napa and Sonoma. This is probably in part due to the very flat, expansive landscape it sits on in the central valley of California. However, just because the land is flat doesn’t mean it’s not pretty, and Lodi is a beautiful region to explore- whether you’re there for the wine or not. The fact that it attracts fewer tourists than other California wine regions also means that wine tastings are generally far more affordable, and I love the laid back, unpretentious atmosphere of a Lodi wine tasting.
One of my favorite wineries in Lodi is the Oak Farm Winery. The winery is set on a stunning family estate scattered with oak trees, and enjoying a flight of wine either in the beautiful barn or on the patio is a wonderful experience. If you want a wine tasting room in Lodi with a more intimate atmosphere, head to Klinker Brick Winery, a beautiful vineyard run by fifth-generation wine growers.
Fair Play

Fair Play has over 20 family-run and operated wineries to explore and is about an hour’s drive from Sacramento. This peaceful and untouched part of California is one of the best wine regions in California. The vineyards here are grown at an elevation of 2000 to 3000 feet. This micro-climate creates the best soil conditions for producing Rhone-style wines.
Skinner Vineyard is an award-winning winery with panoramic views of the hills. They specialize in GSM, a red wine blend consisting of Grenache, Shiraz/Syrah, and Mataro. This blend of wine originated in France’s Southern Rhone region. If you are looking for a full-bodied white wine, I suggest trying their Double Gold winning Grenache Blanc. This varietal originated from Northeast Spain with a flavor profile of honeysuckle, stone fruit, and sandalwood.
E16 Winery is situated in an idyllic spot with a gorgeous tasting room. Sit back and relax while enjoying their highly-rated Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay. Of all the wineries in this area, E16 has the most wines with 90+ scores.
Another winery off the beaten path is Shadow Ranch. Here you can find a part of the rustic Gold Rush era. The original homestead and outbuildings dating from 1888 are still standing! A picturesque location in the Sierra Nevada foothills to enjoy award-winning wines such as their Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Rosé, or The Sheriff (a red wine blend).
Come and visit Fair Play and enjoy a slow-paced and untouched landscape where you can sit back, unwind and savor a wonderful wine tasting experience!
El Dorado

Do you enjoy sipping on a nice robust glass of wine with a view of the Sierra foothills as your backdrop? Well, if you do (who doesn’t?), then the El Dorado Wine Region is the place to visit and one of the best wine regions in California. Located only an hour from Sacramento or South Lake Tahoe, you can experience award-winning wines in a tranquil setting.
The region has 70 wineries, set at an altitude of 1200 to 3500 feet. This complex topography creates microclimates allowing a wide variety of grapes to grow. Most notably, the area is known for its Zinfandel, Barbera, and Syrah.
My favorite winery in the area is Boeger Winery. This family-run winery has staff that are friendly and knowledgeable. The winery is gorgeous! Enjoy the charming 150-year-old homestead located on the grounds with a pond, trees, and a breathtaking view of the vineyards. Boeger has a variety of wines to choose from – they are best known for their Barbera, so make sure you try it before you leave.
Lava Cap Winery is another family-run winery known for its fruit-forward Chardonnay. Try the award-winning Merlot or Petite Sirah as well when you visit. Picnic tables overlook the hills, making for a fantastic spot to bring along a picnic lunch to go with your wine.
The region is also home to orchards and farms. Delfino Farms – Edio Vineyards is the best of both worlds-winery with a family-run bakery on the property. Wines here range from a Chardonnay to Pinot Noir. Outdoor seating provides a fantastic view of the winery and orchards. Bonus: Check out the Henrietta Stich Hard Apple Cider, which is made exclusively from apples and blackberries grown on the premises.
Go to El Dorado and rescue some wine-it’s trapped in the bottle and bring some home!
The Best Wine Regions in California: The South Coast
Temecula
Temecula is a smaller and up-and-coming wine region in the southern part of California. There are over 40 wineries in the region and Italian, French, and Spanish varietals are typically produced. While there are over two dozen varietals of wine found in the Temecula region, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Riesling, and Chardonnay are the most popular wine types produced.
Avensole, Bel Vino, Leoness, and Robert Renzoni are some of the best wineries in the region. At Avensole, a tasting will cost $23 for 6 large pours. They ended up being almost half a glass. I love the atmosphere at Bel Vino. They typically have live music or other events on the weekends. A tasting here costs $15. Leoness is one of the more expensive tastings at $27 but all of their wines are great. Make sure to try out their restaurant as well. My personal favorite is Robert Renzoni as their wines are similar to Italian wines.
Temecula is an easy stop between LA and San Diego and conveniently located right off the freeway. It is also fairly inexpensive for wine tastings. Temecula is a great stop when visiting some of the best wine regions in California.
Malibu

About 40 miles from downtown Los Angeles, three small, relatively new AVA’s comprise the Malibu wine region. The oldest is Malibu-Newton Canyon Valley (1976), then Saddle Rock Malibu (2006), and the most recent, Malibu Coast (2014).
As with most wine-producing areas, it is beautiful. Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains there are sweeping vistas and vineyard-covered hills. Still, you do not need more than a day to explore this California wine region. Unlike some of the more well-known wine tasting areas, Malibu has a very limited number of tasting rooms, and that is part of its attraction.
A great place to start is Cornell Winery and Tasting Room. They offer tastings, as well as wine by the glass and bottle. Enjoy it all on the enchanting outside patio, there may even be some music. The staff is knowledgeable, and they can tell you all about the local wines.
The most popular red wines of the Malibu wine region are Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. These are not big reds like Napa cabs, but they do not command those prices either. The closest thing in the area are the reds of Rocky Oaks Winery. The huge mansion you can see from everywhere but cannot visit.
However, you can visit the nearby Cielo Winery by appointment. Cielo is a great place for a picnic and enjoying the views. Because you need a reservation, there are no crowds to deal with as you sip their locally famous Honey Pie chardonnay blend. Most of the white wines in this area are Chardonnay, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc.
If Cielo is too quiet for you, try Rosenthal’s party-atmosphere tasting room on the Malibu Coast, or one of the tours by Malibu Family Wines. No matter what, Malibu is one of the best wine regions in California.
San Diego

San Diego is usually not the first place that comes to mind as one of the best wine regions in California. However, with over 100 wineries in San Diego County and also one of the first places known to have planted grapes in the state, it should not miss this list.
Since the first grapes were planted by Junipero Serra almost 250 years ago at the oldest Mission in California, the wine industry has come a long way. The vast majority of San Diego wineries are still boutique wineries, yet they can show off award-winning medals from top U.S. wine competitions.
The San Diego wineries are known for the large grape varieties. Over 60 different grapes are grown commercially in this Southern California wine region. Winemakers here are pushing the status quo, introducing new grapes, blends and methods. As a San Diego local, I love seeing the innovative ways the winemakers are working here, blending century-old methods with modern-day knowledge and creating true masterpieces.
Some of the top San Diego wineries include Cordiano Winery, a family-owned winery whose owners are first-generation immigrants from Southern Italy that treat their visitors not only to delectable reds, but also homemade authentic pizzas made in their wood-fired oven. Milagro, another award-winning winery is owned by a winemaking family from the Guadalupe Valley, Mexico, and 100% of its produced wines are grown on their property.
Some of the other best wine regions in California include Madera, located near Yosemite National Park. Make sure to visit Fasi Estate Winery. Near Monterey, check out Hahn Wines and Taste Morgan. The Sta. Rita Hills, a smaller wine region located near Santa Barbara, is another best wine region in California. Here, I recommend Brewer-Clifton, Sanford Winery, and Spear Vineyards and Winery.

As a Californian, I approved of all of these suggestions. Nothing better than a weekend away with some lady friends spent wine tasting!! And the only hard part is picking where to go, since we have sooo many options
