One Day in Doha, Qatar: A Spectacular Long Layover Destination in the Middle East

Doha, the capital city of the country of Qatar, is known for being a large transit hub, so not a lot of people leave the airport. However, one day in Doha is the perfect amount of time to explore this fascinating city and makes for a great long layover destination.

History of Doha

Doha, the capital city of Qatar, has evolved from a modest fishing village into a vibrant, modern metropolis within just a few decades. Historically, it was a small port town known for its pearl diving and trade, with its economy largely dependent on the sea. 

The discovery of oil in the mid-20th century transformed Doha, which caused rapid economic development and urban expansion. With this revenue, the city began to modernize which led to the construction of striking skyscrapers, luxurious hotels, and world-class infrastructure. It recently hosted the World Cup which also built up the city. 

Today, Doha is renowned for its cultural landmarks, such as the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar, as well as its role as a significant global financial and diplomatic hub. The city’s rich heritage is preserved alongside its modern achievements, reflecting a unique blend of tradition and innovation. 

When to Spend One Day in Doha

No matter what time of the year you spend one day in Doha, the weather is going to be HOT! Doha is a desert after all and summers here are similar to summers in Palm Springs with temperatures reaching 120 degrees F. Visiting in the wintertime will mean temperatures around 80 degrees. Plan your itinerary accordingly to stay indoors during the hot part of the day and be prepared to drink lots of water. 

How to Get to Doha

Doha has one main international airport; Hamad International Airport and is one of the busiest airports in the Middle East. Getting to Doha from the United States is quite easy. Most of the flights that originate in the United States will be on Qatar Airways. There are also many airlines from all over the Middle East, Asia, and Europe that fly into Doha as well. 

I booked my flights using points, but Skyscanner is my favorite way to search for flights. From the United States plan to spend at least $1000 round trip for an economy ticket. 

Transportation in Doha

Several of the main sites are in the same area, so it is very easy to walk between them. For some of the other sites, Doha has a decent metro system that goes from the airport all over the city. We opted to use Uber everywhere due to the heat and the convenience of getting quickly between places. 

There is also the option of taxis, which are regulated the same way as Uber and cost about the same. All the taxis take credit cards too. Both taxis and Ubers are very affordable thus making getting around Doha easy.

What to do During One Day in Doha

Doha is a fascinating city that has many interesting things to do. One day in Doha is the perfect amount of time to explore all of the main sites on a stopover vacation. 

The Pearl Island

Start your first morning of one day in Doha with a visit to The Pearl Island. Here visitors can find a variety of shops and restaurants. This area is mostly known for being a replica of the Venice Canals in Italy! It is a great place for some photo opportunities and to wander the canals a little bit. You will want to spend around 30-45 minutes exploring the area. 

Place Vendome Mall

Once you have finished wandering around The Pearl, head to the Place Vendome Mall. Doha is known for having extravagant and huge malls. Plus, this is a great place to cool off after wandering around outside. 

This mall is inspired by French architecture and has a water canal with a dancing water show running through the mall. Visitors can also find almost every store imaginable in this mall so it is a shopper paradise. When you need a break from walking around, make sure to check out one of the many fancy cafes. 

Damasca One Restaurant

Next, grab lunch at Damasca One Restaurant, a popular restaurant in the Old Town of Doha. This Arabic/Syrian restaurant is known for its mezze platters and kebabs. The dishes are huge, so you may want to order a couple things and share. Prices will run around $20/person.

Visit Old Town Doha

After fueling up from lunch, spend some time exploring the Old Town of Doha. You will not want to miss this area during your one day in Doha. The Old Town in Doha, is the historic heart of Qatar’s capital and is a captivating blend of tradition and charm that offers a window into the country’s rich heritage. You will not want to miss the architecture in this area with towers and mud-brick buildings which provide a stark contrast to Doha’s modern buildings. 

Souq Waqif

One of the main sites in the Old Town is the bustling Souq Waqif. This area is renowned for its vibrant markets, where visitors can explore a maze of alleys brimming with traditional crafts, spices, and local delicacies. You can find many goods here so it is a great place for souvenir shopping. 

Doha Fort

The historical military fortress is located in Old Town Doha. Built in 1927, the fort later became a museum. It once was a gathering place to trade livestock and other goods. Present-day visitors can check out exhibits of artwork and handicrafts as well as historical photos. 

Grand Mosque

The Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in Doha and was built in 2011. Especially if you have not been inside a mosque before, you will want to visit the Grand Mosque during one day in Doha. Its traditional architecture attracts many visitors along with the three libraries, prayer rooms, and event halls. Anyone can visit during non-prayer times, just make sure to dress respectfully. 

Museum of Islamic Art

This afternoon, escape the heat at the Museum of Islamic Art, the perfect stop during your one day in Doha. This museum is celebrated for its architecture and extensive collection of Islamic artifacts. Visitors are able to view a variety of artifacts spanning over 1,400 years that includes ceramics, textiles, manuscript, and metalwork. It is a must-visit stop for anyone interested in the art and history of the Islamic world.

National Museum of Qatar

Hours: Sun-Thus: 9am-7pm, Fri-Sat: 1pm-7pm, Closed Tuesday

Another great stop during your one day in Doha is the National Museum of Qatar. This museum covers the past, present, and future of Qatar and offers a look into the Qatari heritage. With interactive displays and immersive experiences, the museum vividly illustrates the dynamic cultural and historical evolution of Qatar. 

Saasna Qatari Restaurant

To wrap up your one day in Doha, grab dinner at Saasna. This is a fantastic place to try some local dishes and the service is impeccable. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoors, they have air conditioning units, so it is not hot at all. We got a delicious salad and Chicken Mashkhool. You cannot go wrong with anything you order. 

Final Tips for One Day in Doha

As you can see, there are a ton of amazing things to do during one day in Doha. It is the perfect stopover when heading to countries across Africa or places like India or Sri Lanka. Jordan is another great destination in the area.
