History of Kuala Lumpur
Prior to Kuala Lumpur being a city, the Indigenous Orang Asli people lived in the area. In the mid 1800s, many Chinese came to the area for the mining industry. Later in the 1800s, the British began to colonize the area and developed a town.
The 1900s saw a rapid growth of the area with many infrastructure developments such as railways, roads, and buildings. Kuala Lumpur then became the capital of the Federated Malay states. In 1957 Malaysia gained independence from Britain. Today, Kuala Lumpur is still the vibrant capital of Malaysia and is a hub for business, tourism, and cultural activities.
Currency in Kuala Lumpur
The Malaysian Ringgit is the official currency of Malaysia. You can easily get Ringgit out of the ATMs upon arrival at the airport. The majority of the places you will visit on this one day Kuala Lumpur itinerary will take a credit card, but you will still need a little bit of cash.
When to Spend One Day in Kuala Lumpur
In general, the best time to visit Kuala Lumpur is from December to March during their dry season. The weather is hot and humid throughout most of the year with sporadic showers, so keep that in mind when visiting.
How to Get to Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur has one international airport: Kuala Lumpur International Airport. You can catch flights to Kuala Lumpur from all over Asia. There are also a few flights from major cities in Europe and Australia. Coming from the United States, you will have a layover. Ours was in Singapore.
Transportation in Kuala Lumpur
It is very easy to get around Kuala Lumpur either via Grab or public transportation. Grab is the Asian version of Uber that is used throughout many countries in Asia. I recommend downloading it and setting it up prior to leaving on vacation for ease of travel. Grab rides are very affordable.
Alternatively, you can take various modes of public transportation. Buses and the MRT run throughout Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding area.
To get to and from the airport, you can opt to book a private airport transfer, take a Grab, or take this train transfer. We opted to take a Grab for flexibility and it cost around $10.
Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur has many fantastic hotels to stay at across the city. I recommend staying near the Petronas Twin Towers. One of the best hotels is the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur. Other options near the Twin Towers include the The Westin Kuala Lumpur, the The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur, and the JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Day 1
Batu Caves

One of the best places to visit during one day in Kuala Lumpur are the Batu Caves. The Batu Caves are a significant religious and cultural site located just outside of the city center. The caves were formed around 400 million years ago.
The Batu Caves are a very spiritual place for the Hindu and one of the most sacred outside of India. Present-day, the caves consist of several caves and offer panoramic views at the top of the stairs.
I recommend getting here before 8am if you want pictures and video without anyone else there. The later in the day you visit, the more hot and crowded it will get. The caves are free to enter, but you do have to pay if you want to go inside any of the shrines.

Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square is the most significant square in Kuala Lumpur. It is the site of where Malaysia’s first Prime Minister declared independence from British rule in 1957. Surrounding the square are many historical buildings including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building abd the Royal Selangor Club.
In the center of the square lies one of the tallest flagpoles in the world that is 312 feet tall and the Malaysian flag flies proudly atop the pole. Throughout the year, many events, celebrations, and national gatherings are held in the square.
Central Market

Another awesome stop to visit during one day in Kuala Lumpur is the Central Market. This is a prevalent shopping hub of the city. It has over 200 shops and stalls and visitors can find pretty much anything here.
The market has a history dating back to 1888, but the current building was built in the 1930s. Many cultural performances and events are held here throughout the year. You will not want to miss stopping at the Central Market.
National Mosque of Malaysia

Hours: Monday-Friday 9am-1pm, 2pm-5pm
The National Mosque of Malaysia is a symbol of Malaysia’s Islamic faith. Built in 1965, it can accommodate 15,000 worshipers. Its striking design includes a tall minaret, lush gardens, and reflecting pools creating a serene atmosphere. Non-Muslim visitors can enter during non-worship hours, just make sure to cover up!
KL Forest Eco Park

Hours: 7am-11pm
At the KL Forest Eco Park, visitors can take in a glimpse of a tropical rainforest. There are various canopy walkways, well-marked trails, and educational displays to view the flora and fauna of the rainforest. It is a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Note that they only take cash for admission so make sure to have some available if you visit.
Menara Kuala Lumpur

The Menara Kuala Lumpur, also known as the KL Tower, is a prominent landmark in Kuala Lumpur. This tower was completed in 1955 and contains an observation deck with a revolving restaurant. You can buy KL Tower admission tickets ahead of time to beat the line. It is a great stop to visit during one day in Kuala Lumpur if you want to see a unique view of the city.
Petronas Twin Towers

Hours: Tues-Sun: 10am-6pm
This iconic landmark is something you cannot miss during one day in Kuala Lumpur. This landmark stands out in the city’s skyline. Completed in 1998, these twin skyscrapers stand 452 meters and held the title of the world’s tallest building until 2004. This 88-floor building has a skybridge at the 41st and 42nd floors that offer views of the city that you can buy tickets to.
KLCC Park

The Heli Lounge Bar has become a very Insta-famous place to stop at during your one day in Kuala Lumpur. This rooftop offers stunning 360 degree views set atop a functioning helipad. Note that it does now charge a cover fee, but the money you pay can go towards your drinks.
Bar Trigona

To finish off your one day in Kuala Lumpur, grab a drink at Bar Trigona. This bar is located in the Four Seasons Hotel and they have the best creative cocktails. The bar uses a lot of locally sourced ingredients, especially honey in their cocktails. It is also listed in Asia’s top 50 bars.
