Petaluma, California, is a charming small town in northern California and is one of the most memorable and underrated spring destinations in California.

As the weather warms up with highs of 75°F, Petaluma invites visitors to explore its scenic beauty and outdoor adventures. Start your journey by taking a tour through a privately owned adobe home in Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park.

You can also take a stroll through the Helen Putnam Regional Park, with walking trails like the South Loop Trail. Don’t miss the opportunity to meander through Petaluma’s downtown area. The streets are filled with charming boutiques, cobbled pathways, and delightful eateries.

Check out the unique Bank Antiques boutique, where you can walk into a vault. Work up an appetite for the Petaluma Pie Company and get a sweet and savory pie for lunch. Immerse yourself in the local festivities, especially if you visit in early spring. Petaluma hosts events like the Butter and Egg Days Parade, celebrating the city’s agricultural heritage in April.

One of the best places to stay in Petaluma is the Sheraton Sonoma Wine Country Petaluma Hotel. Ask for a waterfront room to see the beautiful sunset behind the boats that are docked here. Whether you choose to explore Petaluma’s historical sites, natural wonders, or vibrant downtown, your spring break in this California gem promises unforgettable experiences.

Best Underrated Spring Destinations in Central California

Lone Pine and Alabama Hills

By Amanda of A Dangerous Business Travel Blog

The small town of Lone Pine, California (population: fewer than 2,000) probably doesn’t appear on many peoples’ California bucket lists thus making it one of the most underrated spring destinations in California. But it honestly should, especially if you’re looking for an underrated spot with some great things to see and do nearby. It’s especially nice in the spring, with mild temperatures and longer daylight hours.

Lone Pine itself has an eclectic Old West feel, and sits in the Owens Valley in between the Sierra Nevada and the Inyo mountains. This means there are some seriously epic views to be seen here!

The top thing to do in Lone Pine is visit Alabama Hills, a recreation area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Alabama Hills is a popular backcountry camping spot but is also home to some hiking trails and views of Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States. Hike the Arch Loop Trail and take some photos on “Movie Road.”

Other things to do in/near Lone Pine include visiting the Museum of Western Film History, getting a giant cinnamon roll at Alabama Hills Cafe & Bakery, and visiting the nearby Manzanar National Historic Site (one of 10 “War Relocation Camps” during WWII where Japanese-Americans were imprisoned by the US government). Manzanar isn’t a “fun” site to visit, but a very important historical one.

You could also use Lone Pine as a base for visiting parts of Death Valley National Park, roughly 1.5 hours away. You do need a car to reach Lone Pine, and I recommend staying at least two nights to see/do everything. It makes a great stop on a longer California road trip itinerary.

Lone Pine has a few character-filled motels, like the Best Western Plus Frontier Motel and the Dow Villa Motel. Rooms can be found at both in the spring for less than $120 per night. No matter what, Lone Pine is one of the most underrated spring destinations in California.

Pinnacles National Park

By Alyssa, An Apple a Plane

Pinnacles National Park is one of the most underrated spring destinations in California, and spring is the most popular time to visit!  For starters, Pinnacles is one of the smallest national parks in the United States.

Visiting in the spring is great due to mild temperatures and vibrant wildflowers.  This is prime hiking time! Some of the best hikes at Pinnacles National Park are Jawbone Trail and Bear Gulch Cave Trail.

On the topic of caves, Pinnacles is known for its unique and rare talus caves!  For adventure lovers, there are also hundreds of rock climbing routes in the national park.  If you have never rock climbed outdoors before, book your climbing adventure with a guide.  If you are an experienced rock climber, check out Mountain Project for routes before you go.  Always check the area or safety conditions and flaky rocks upon arrival.

The closest airport to Pinnacles National Park is San Francisco International Airport.  It is a two-hour drive by car from the airport.  I recommend renting a car because there is no direct public transportation route from San Francisco.

If you choose to go camping, you can visit Pinnacles National Park on a lower budget.  There is only one campground within the national park that books quickly during high season, so it is recommended to book online in advance.  One full day at Pinnacles National Park is a perfect amount of time to spend at one of the most underrated spring destinations in California!

Best Underrated Spring Destinations in Southern California

By Haley Blackall of Cool California Hotels.

Ojai, California, a serene gem nestled in the Ventura River Valley, often flies under the radar, but it’s an idyllic retreat for a spring getaway. Three to four days are best here to soak in its tranquil charm and natural beauty and makes it one of the most underrated spring destinations in California.

In spring, Ojai blesses its visitors with mild, sunny weather, typically ranging from the high 50s to mid-70s. It’s perfect for outdoor activities without the intense heat of summer.

The town is easily accessible from Los Angeles or Santa Barbara, driving about 1.5 to 2 hours. While public transport options are limited, having a car is advantageous for getting to Ojai and exploring the picturesque surroundings at your own pace.

For accommodation, consider staying in the heart of the valley. Cool boutique hotels in Ojai blend luxury with a rustic charm for a relaxing stay. The Ojai Valley Inn is a personal favorite for its elegant rooms and stunning views.

From hiking in the Los Padres National Forest to exploring local art galleries, this quiet and rich cultural destination has so much to offer. Ojai is a hidden gem when it comes to local olive oil farms and wineries and is a great alternative to popular Napa and Sonoma Valleys.

Ojai is a destination that can be easily enjoyed on a moderate budget. Expect to spend around $150 to $250 per day, considering lodging, meals, and activities.

Torrance

By Janelle of Make the Trip Matter

Looking for one of the most refreshing and underrated spring destinations in California? Consider Torrance – a hidden gem near Los Angeles that often escapes the typical tourist radar.

Torrance has a range of activities for every interest. Its southwestern end lands on the beach (where you can surf, bike down the strand, play beach volleyball, etc.), and it’s within easy access to the rest of the South Bay. Catch the Farmers Market at Wilson Park, explore the many excellent restaurants in Torrance (a hidden gem for foodies!), or go shopping at the popular Del Amo Mall. For a unique experience, visit the Western Museum of Flight.

I’d recommend spending about three to five days in Torrance to fully explore its charm without feeling rushed. During spring, the weather is generally mild and pleasant (highs of 68 to 72°F and lows of 50 to 56°F). Pack in layers and bring a jacket for cooler evenings.

Getting to Torrance is a breeze (located just 20 minutes south of LAX or off any of the major freeways), and a car is recommended for convenient exploration of the surrounding areas. The city offers various accommodation options, but the best areas to stay are in the Old Torrance neighborhood for a bit of historic charm or closer to Redondo Beach for easy beach access.

Torrance is also located perfectly between Los Angeles and Orange County, which makes it a great place to stay as a day base for exploring the top attractions of the region. Plus, since it’s a lesser-known city, it also tends to be more budget-friendly and less busy than other parts of southern California.

Palm Desert

By Kelly of Just One Passport

Nestled in the heart of the Coachella Valley, Palm Desert offers a refuge from the larger cities of California and its ritzier and more expensive neighbor of Palm Springs. It is one of the most underrated spring destinations in California.

Despite its smaller size, Palm Desert is an ultimate California destination in its own right.  Active seniors, families, and couples seeking an off-the-beaten-path Spring getaway will be in awe when they lay eyes on the desert oasis blended with the natural beauty of the mountains.

With desert hiking trails such as the Bump and Grind (yes, it’s as challenging as the name sounds)and the Art Smith Trail, avid hikers will be challenged as they climb to the summit and take in the panoramic views of the valley, surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains.

For a more relaxing outing, I recommend visiting the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. It’s simply breathtaking, and you can easily spend half a day wandering around.

Foodies and shoppers haven’t been forgotten when visiting Palm Desert. There are a plethora of restaurants and boutique shops that will keep you shopping and eating for days.

Palm Desert is the ideal 4 to 5-day getaway year-round. However, Spring offers the ideal weather for outdoor enthusiasts. Winter months of November to March tend to be cooler, and there’s a risk of snow on the trails and mountains. The summer heat is unbearable, with temperatures reaching over 100 Fahrenheit. Remember, this is the desert.

Although Palm Desert is a smaller town, there are plenty of options when it comes to accommodations. You’ll find the usual chain hotels, as well as several boutique hotels and inns. I opted for a rental in a gated community with a pool during my Spring getaway. The majority of the hotels are an easy drive to the trails, zoo, shops, and restaurants.

Palm Desert’s appeal to visitors lies in its natural beauty and tranquility.  Travelers are lured to this underrated destination in the heart of California’s desert landscape for a more relaxed atmosphere and an abundance of activities.

Mojave National Preserve

By Monica of This Rare Earth

Visiting the Mojave National Preserve in the spring is a great experience for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. It is one of the least visited parks in California, so it is the perfect place for quiet, solitude, and nature and thus is one of the most underrated spring destinations in California.

Spring marks the best time to visit the Preserve because the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Temperatures range from the upper 60s to the high 80s Fahrenheit, with occasional rain and the potential to see colorful wildflowers strewn across the desert floor.

Some of the scenic hikes to consider are the Teutonia Peak Trail, the Lava Tube Trail, and the Kelso Dunes hike. Along the way, visitors will see rugged mountains, sand dunes, lava streams, cinder cones, and Joshua trees.

A vehicle is necessary to move around the expansive preserve since the Mojave National Preserve is vast and there is no public transportation available. Four-wheel drive is needed to see everything, but those with standard cars can still see a lot!

For overnight stays, the Hole in the Wall Campground is a cozy and peaceful spot, with 35 campsites available. Though the Mojave National Preserve is often underrated, it provides one of the most impressive landscapes in California. It is a hidden gem, with stunningly scenic views.

The ideal length of stay would be about one weekend, but it depends on what you want to do and see. From rugged trails and volcanic debris to outstanding viewpoints, this park will leave you in awe.

Long Beach

By Faith of 3 Tickets Please

Long Beach, California, stands as one of the underrated spring destinations in California, offering a blend of urban excitement and coastal tranquility. Close to the bustling city of Los Angeles, Long Beach provides an ideal escape where visitors can access the big city but enjoy the benefits of a small-town beach lifestyle.

One of the city’s prime attractions is the city’s proximity to the iconic Venice. Kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding along the nearby Venice canals provides great views and a good workout. If you are traveling with your four–legged friend, Long Beach is home to Rosie’s Dog Beach, the best dog-friendly beach in Southern California.

Long Beach is not just about the sea and sand; the city’s 4.5-mile pedestrian bikeway is perfect for in-line skating, walking, or biking. There are so many ways to be active in Long Beach, which makes the city especially great for traveling with kids or teens

While a car may be necessary for venturing to major attractions in the vicinity, Long Beach encourages eco-friendly exploration through its bike share program. Biking becomes an easy way of navigating Long Beach, allowing visitors to soak in the coastal breeze.

As you pedal through the city, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the iconic Queen Mary, a historic ocean liner turned floating hotel and museum. Or check out Aquarium of the Pacific, the largest aquarium in California. And when the sun begins to dip below the horizon, take a leisurely ride along the Boardwalk, indulging in a pitstop for some ice cream.

With its diverse offerings, Long Beach is a charming destination best experienced in three to four days. So, if you’re yearning for a perfect blend of city excitement and beachside bliss, Long Beach is the perfect Spring getaway.

Slab City

By Andy of Explore With Finesse

Slab City, an off-grid community located in the California desert, is an underrated spring destination. While it may not be the conventional choice for travelers, this alternative getaway is worth visiting, at least for a day trip.

Spring is the best time of year to visit Slab City to avoid extreme temperatures. The weather hovers around the mid-70s°F (23-26°C) and rarely rains, so it is a great time to be outside.

You will need a car to reach Slab City. This isolated community is not accessible via public transportation. In addition, there are no traditional accommodations located in Slab City. Unless you choose to camp in Slab City, you will have to stay in a nearby city, such as Niland, for accommodation.

Slab City is an underrated place to visit due to its unconventional nature. There are also plenty of unique art exhibits that are worth checking out. The most famous art installation is Salvation Mountain, a huge mound of readily available materials such as trash and car parts that have been covered in paint. In addition to this exhibit, you can also check out community events at the Range, a local gathering spot.

Slab City is a very cost-effective destination. Almost all art exhibits are free, so your expenses will be minimal. The biggest expenses for coming here will be fuel charges. No matter what, it is one of the most underrated spring destinations in California.
