Carmel is a tiny town on the beautiful coast of Northern California that is one of the underrated winter destinations in California. It’s an underrated spot this time of year because people think of Carmel as a summer vacation hangout. This makes the one square mile of Carmel ideal for families or couples during the holiday season. The tourists are few, and the activities are many!
Carmel was originally an artists’ community and is known for its beautiful beach, Cypress trees, and killer views. Enjoy all the things to do, from walking on the beach to shopping in all of the great boutiques and galleries on Ocean Ave. Find the famous Fairytale Cottages sprinkled around town, explore the historic Mission Basilica, take bike rides on the 17-mile drive, and see the Frank Lloyd Wright House. There are a plethora of excellent restaurants in Carmel, so you definitely won’t be hungry or thirsty!
Carmel is just about a 2-hour drive south of San Francisco and just 1.5 hours from San Jose. It’s easy to find parking in town, and then you don’t need to get back in the car until you leave if you like! It’s great for a 3-day weekend trip that will help you feel relaxed and refreshed!
The winter daytime temps tend to be in the 60’s which makes for great walks on the beach in cozy sweaters. The evenings can be foggy, so plan on drinking some hot cocoa at one of the many great cafes in town.
If you are up for adventures out of town, then visit the gorgeous Point Lobos State Reserve or the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
You’ll find a great range of hotels, B&Bs, and Inns in Carmel. They tend to get more pricey the closer to the beach they are, but the off-season of wintertime offers some good deals. Try one of the most quaint spots at The Normandy Inn.

Point Reyes

Point Reyes makes for a wonderful winter getaway and is one of the underrated winter destinations in California. While you can visit for the day, you can also spend a weekend or a few days here, enjoying the hikes and the beautiful scenery.
Since Point Reyes is right next to the ocean, temperatures are moderate even in the winter (low to mid-60s Fahrenheit for the daytime high). It can be breezy, so be sure to bring a warm jacket! Winter actually offers more fog-free days than summer, plus the opportunity to see migrating whales, so it’s a great time to visit the park.
The park is spread out, so you do need a car to see all the best sights. Base in Point Reyes Station, where you can book a room at the Point Reyes Station Inn. There are several eateries here as well.
One of the best things to do in Point Reyes is to view and photograph the very picturesque Point Reyes Lighthouse. There are numerous trails to hike in the park. Some of the best hikes include the Tomales Point Trail, Abbott’s Lagoon, and Chimney Rock Trail. The beaches at Point Reyes can be wild, with strong surf, but Heart’s Desire Beach at Tomales Bay is the beach to pick if the day is nice and you can want some beach time.
You’ll want to visit Point Reyes National Seashore not only for its windswept beauty but also for the opportunities to see wildlife such as tule elk, and many species of birds. It’s so spread out that it rarely feels crowded!
Russian River

Although winter often brings blue skies, the occasional heavy snowstorm is not uncommon. Be prepared with accurate weather forecasts as well as a capable car with 4-wheel drive or chains (you won’t be able to drive up 80 without them!)
If you’re arriving late and don’t want to make the steep ascent into the mountains, consider a stopover in Nevada City, an eclectic town just off of Route 49. Take advantage of this time to walk around the main town center to see the quirky storefronts and offerings from the locals. Stay in the middle of the beauty at the historic National Exchange Hotel, but before you leave, be sure to stop by Elixart to explore the unique teas to warm you up for the rest of the drive!
Truckee is a haven for mountain enthusiasts, offering plenty of ways to explore on foot or sit back and enjoy the view. Begin the day at the Donner Train Tunnels next to Donner Ski Ranch for both adventure and panoramic mountain views! Here you can hike through historic railroad tunnels that weave through the mountains, with a trail continuing to the summit of Donner Peak. Experience the best views of Donner Lake and walk the area that tragically took the famous Donner Party in 1846. Most of the trail can be done in hiking boots, however, you will need snowshoes or skins to reach the summit!
Head back into Truckee for some warm food at the Alibi Ale Works brewpub, and take some time to stroll along the main street of Truckee. If you enjoy skiing, you’re in luck with plenty of options to hit the slopes near Truckee on the following day! Head down to Olympic Valley and ski at the famous Palisades Tahoe, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 1960. If you’re looking to save money, Donner Ski Ranch right in Truckee is amazing and only a third of the cost!
After a day in the snow, head north to the Sierra Hot Springs for a perfect way to end the trip. Relax in various pools of hot (or ice-cold) water, featuring a wooden dome, sauna, and even a hot spring pool in the middle of the woods! There is lodging on site and an amazing restaurant offering local fare.

California’s tourism really spikes in the summer, but there are still tons of great places to go for a California winter vacation, especially in wine country. Paso Robles is one of the underrated winter destinations in California for a three day winter weekend getaway.
Paso is strategically located on California’s lovely Central Coast. The weather in the winter is pretty forgiving, with average highs in the low 60’s and moderate rain. Paso is about equidistant between LA and San Francisco. Either city can get you there in ~3.5 hours on major freeways. But you can also get to Paso the slow, scenic way by taking Highway 1 south through Big Sur or north through Santa Barbara.
Once there, there are tons of fun things to do in Paso Robles. The region is well known for its wine growing, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Chardonnay. The wineries add a lot of value by offering things like sculpture gardens, games, and food. And even if you aren’t a serious wine person, Paso also has a distillery trail, olive oil tastings, and craft breweries.
In addition, Paso has a ton of quiet backroads to explore, a cute town square with shops, great restaurants, and the Estrella Warbirds Museum (which is perfect for history buffs). And if you are into art, the Sensorio immersive light display is sensational.
For a family-friendly stay, we recommend the Stables Inn, which offers a bunkhouse. For a splurge, you could stay at one of the winery inns, like the CaliPaso Winery, Croad Vineyards, or Allegretto Vineyard.
Sequoia National Park

Malibu

We visited Malibu in the winter, and it was one of the great underrated winter destinations in California! While Malibu is known for its stunning beaches in the summer, there are several reasons why exploring this coastal gem during the winter months can be a unique and enjoyable experience. The first is that Malibu enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate throughout the year with winter low temperatures in the lower 50s F and high temps in the upper 60s F.
The second reason Malibu is great in the winter is that it offers a quieter, more peaceful experience compared to the crowded summer months. We traveled when my son was a toddler, and both my kids loved having the beach all to themselves! Finally, the best reason to visit in the winter is that hotels and excursions are much lower in price in the off-season.
The best area to stay, in my opinion, is Malibu Beach because you have access to the ocean and beautiful sunsets every night. The main attraction is the beach, but you can also explore the many hiking trails, art galleries, and museums. Getty Villa and the Malibu Lagoon Museum are two to add to your list. We loved eating at Malibu Seafood Fresh Fish Market & Patio Cafe, with a beautiful view of the ocean and fresh seafood.
Alabama Hills

The Alabama Hills, located in the eastern Sierras by the teeny town of Lone Pine, is an epic place to visit any time of the year. It’s known for its stunning landscape, complete with the tallest mountains in the contiguous United States and enormous rounded monzogranite boulders. The scenery is so otherworldly that it’s been used as a filming location for a number of films, including Django Unchained and Iron Man.
The best way to enjoy the Alabama Hills is to explore it on foot. For example, the Mobius Arch Trail takes you through a maze of monzogranite rock formations to a natural archway that frames the snowy Sierra Nevadas. For something a bit different, consider visiting the Museum of Western Film History, which hosts a number of props, movie posters, and other artifacts from the hundreds of movies that have been filmed here.
Alabama Hills and the surrounding area are definitely a sleepy area that’s great for enjoying nature and remembering a simpler time. A weekend is enough time to soak in the views, explore Lone Pine, and enjoy some of the awesome outdoor activities that the Alabama Hills has to offer.
This area experiences fairly moderate weather in the winter, with daily highs in the 50s and daily lows in the upper 20s. It’s not unusual to have a light dusting of snow on the ground, although it usually melts fairly quickly. However, the Sierra Nevadas are usually covered with a solid layer of snow, making the landscape look that much more magical.
The closest major airport is LAX in Los Angeles, about a three-and-a-half-hour drive south of the Alabama Hills. Given the area’s remoteness, you’ll definitely need a car to get around! Either way, it is one of the most underrated winter destinations in California.
One of the best things about this area is how affordable it can be. For example, if you want to save some money, consider camping in the Alabama Hills, such as at the Tuttle Creek Campground, for just $8 a night. Just remember to bring along a warm sleeping bag—it definitely gets chilly at night!
